About Us
Nexus Nova Innovations is an early-stage startup based in Des Moines, Iowa, developing next-generation aerial mobility technology.
We are seeking a controls engineer who can also help build and test physical proofs of concept. This role connects simulation, control software, sensors, actuators, electronics, mechanical hardware, and real-world testing.
We need someone who is comfortable moving between calculations, code, test equipment, and physical prototypes. The goal is to turn ideas into measurable tests, find out what works, identify what does not, and use the results to guide the next stage of development.
This is not a purely theoretical controls position. It requires hands-on engineering, careful testing, and honest evaluation of the results.
Key Responsibilities
- Control-System Development: Model, develop, and tune control systems for vehicle and subsystem behavior.
- Simulation: Build simulations to evaluate stability, response, disturbances, actuator limits, and failure cases.
- Proof-of-Concept Development: Design and help assemble benchtop rigs, subsystem prototypes, and other test hardware.
- Sensor Integration: Select, calibrate, filter, and integrate sensors used for control and data collection.
- Actuator Integration: Work with motors, controllers, servos, power systems, and other physical components.
- Embedded Development: Implement and test control logic on embedded or real-time hardware.
- Testing: Develop test plans, acceptance criteria, safety limits, and shutdown conditions.
- Data Analysis: Review test results and identify whether problems come from the controls, sensors, software, electronics, or mechanical system.
- System Documentation: Record test setups, assumptions, results, failures, and recommended next steps.
- Engineering Collaboration: Work with the aerospace, mechanical, electrical, software, and design teams.
- Safety: Maintain controlled test boundaries and follow applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
- Engineering Background: Education or equivalent professional experience in controls, aerospace, mechanical, electrical, robotics, mechatronics, or a related field.
- Controls Knowledge: Strong understanding of feedback control, stability, system dynamics, estimation, or system identification.
- Programming and Simulation: Experience with MATLAB/Simulink, Python, C/C++, or similar tools.
- Hardware Experience: Experience integrating sensors, actuators, embedded controllers, or data-acquisition equipment.
- Hands-On Ability: Comfortable building, wiring, testing, troubleshooting, and modifying physical systems.
- Testing Discipline: Ability to create structured tests and draw defensible conclusions from the results.
- Flight or Robotics Experience (Plus): Experience with UAVs, eVTOL, aircraft, drones, robotics, automotive controls, or active stabilization.
- Platform Experience (Plus): Familiarity with PX4, ArduPilot, ROS 2, hardware-in-the-loop testing, or real-time operating systems.
- Startup Experience (Plus): Comfortable working with evolving designs and limited early-stage resources.
Compensation
Upon the successful close of our current investment round, we anticipate offering a compensation package that may include salary or contract pay, performance-based incentives, equity/shares, or a combination of these options.
NNI is based in Des Moines, Iowa. Some work may begin remotely, but this position will require on-site availability for physical integration and testing. Any work and compensation arrangements will be established in writing before work begins.
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Benefits:
- Flexible schedule
