Position Description-Assistant Teacher
Reports to:
Geneva Presbyterian Preschool Director.
Description of Position:
Under the direct supervision of the Preschool director-
The teacher provides a warm, nurturing, stimulating, safe and loving environment where each child has the opportunity to develop language, cognitive, social, emotional, and physical skills appropriately.
The assistant teacher’s responsibility is to assist the lead teacher in conducting, teaching, and managing a classroom within a specific age group.
The assistant teacher works with the preschool director, lead teacher, and parents to create a program which will provide children 18 months to 36 months of age with experiences that will enable them to achieve in all areas of development.
Hours of work are 8:45 A.M. to 12:15 P.M, (sometimes until 1:15) weekdays as scheduled.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Education and Development
1. Distributing, arranging, and maintaining the teaching material in the classroom. Monitors equipment, supplies and materials to ensure they are in good condition.
2. Lead all snack activities, clean tables after snack and make sure floor around tables are clean.
3. Assist children that need to use the restroom during class time. He/she will walk students to bathroom and keep doors open for safety. He/She will change diapers as needed.
4. Lead/supervise outside playground time. He/she will help monitor playground at all times.
5. Provide a developmentally appropriate, stimulating learning environment by adding new and interesting materials each week.
6. Provide a warm, nurturing, loving and positive environment, using positive guidance techniques and upholding the Geneva Presbyterian Preschool and Church MMO Discipline Policy.
7. Develop nurturing relationships with each child by encouraging his or her social and emotional development
8. Maintain the classroom in a neat, clean, and aesthetically appealing manner. Prepare the classroom environment; to ensure that all supplies and materials are on hand when needed, that activities are properly set up; and that the classroom reflects a warm, inviting and pleasurable learning atmosphere. Assistant teacher takes out garbage, wipes down and disinfect tables and toys daily.
9. Recognize minor health problems and detect symptoms of childhood diseases
10. Carry out the philosophies, policies, goals and administrative requirements of the preschool and church as stated in the Staff handbook and from the Preschool Director. Attend meetings and conferences pertaining to teachers, parents and/or church at reasonable times and places as required. Enhance the good name of Geneva Presbyterian Preschool and Church through her/his professional and personal contact.
SPECIFICATIONS
Ability to work in harmony with, and under the direct supervision of the preschool director and lead teacher.
Ability to communicate and otherwise inter-relate with young children at their level in a positive, warm and loving manner while maintaining appropriate respect and discipline.
Ability to be flexible and adaptable; accepting of individual differences; patient, sensitive, kind and compassionate; have a sense of humor; be friendly and outgoing.
A strong motivation for self-development through continuing education and self-study.
Able to demonstrate her/his faith in love for Jesus Christ, is desired to the life of faith and is serious in purpose, honest in character, and joyful in service.
Preferred Experience
- Prior classroom experience working with children in early childhood education settings such as daycare, preschool, or private schools.
- Demonstrated knowledge of childhood development principles and behavior management strategies.
- Experience in curriculum development across subjects including literacy education, math, physical education, and early intervention programs.
- Familiarity with classroom management techniques specific to toddler care and preschool environments.
