Duties
- Safely operate commercial trucks including tractor-trailers, flatbeds, tankers, refrigerated trailers, dump trucks, roll-off trucks, and other specialized vehicles to transport freight across regional or OTR routes.
- Load and unload cargo using manual handling techniques or equipment such as forklifts while ensuring proper securing of loads in compliance with DOT regulations.
- Navigate using GPS systems efficiently to reach delivery destinations on time while maintaining awareness of traffic laws and safety standards.
- Deliver freight—including hazardous materials and dangerous goods—following all hazardous materials regulations and safety protocols.
- Manage truck loading and unloading processes accurately, verifying cargo against shipping documentation to ensure proper delivery.
- Maintain compliance with FMCSA regulations, DOT (Department of Transportation) rules, and hazardous materials regulations during all phases of transportation.
- Communicate effectively with dispatch teams regarding route status, delivery updates, or any issues encountered during transit.
- Perform routine vehicle inspections before and after trips to ensure safety standards are met; report any mechanical issues promptly.
- Adhere to safety procedures for manual transmission operation and truck driving best practices to promote a safe working environment.
Experience
- Proven experience in commercial truck driving with a focus on route driving, delivery driving, or over-the-road (OTR) routes.
- Demonstrated ability to handle various types of freight including freight requiring special handling such as refrigerated goods, hazardous materials, flatbed loads, tanker shipments, or automobile transportation.
- Valid CDL license with necessary endorsements for the type of vehicle operated; Hazmat certification is preferred but not mandatory at hire if willing to obtain training.
- Knowledge of FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) regulations, DOT (Department of Transportation) rules, hazard materials regulations, and safety standards for truck loading/unloading.
- Experience operating equipment such as forklifts or dump trucks is advantageous but not required; training can be provided for qualified candidates.
- Strong understanding of GPS navigation tools and route planning strategies to optimize delivery schedules efficiently.
- Ability to perform manual handling tasks safely while managing logistics cargo handling responsibilities effectively.
