Overview
West Portland Cheer prides itself in being an accepting, encouraging, positive environment for youth to grow in athleticism, confidence and as happy humans. Our teams consist of youth as young as Kindergarten all the way to Seniors in high school. We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Cheerleading Coach to join our cheer program. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of Cheerleading techniques including stunting, tumbling and safety. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong knowledge of OCCA competition and safety rules. A candidate should have experience in sports coaching, particularly in cheerleading, and a strong ability to educate and inspire young athletes. This role involves working closely with students to develop their skills, promote teamwork, and foster a positive and energetic environment.
West Portland Cheer coaches through three seasons - Sideline Season starting in August, Competition Season starting in October, and Spring Season running April through the end of May. There are also opportunities to coach at summer camp.
Duties
- Develop and implement cheerleading routines that align with the team's goals and objectives.
- Educate students on cheerleading techniques, safety practices, and performance skills.
- Organize and conduct regular practice sessions to enhance team performance.
- Provide constructive feedback to athletes to improve their skills and confidence.
- Foster teamwork, sportsmanship, and a positive attitude among team members.
- Collaborate with other coaches and the board to coordinate events, competitions, and performances.
- Ensure the gym environment is safe for all participants by adhering to safety protocols.
- Maintain open communication with students and parents regarding team progress and expectations.
Requirements
- Previous experience in cheerleading or sports coaching is preferred.
- Background in related sports such as gymnastics, dance, or tumbling is a plus.
- Experience working with students in a coaching or childcare capacity is highly desirable.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and inspire young athletes.
- Excellent communication skills for effective interaction with students and parents.
- Ability to demonstrate cheerleading techniques clearly and effectively.
- A passion for promoting physical fitness and teamwork among youth athletes.
