Gearstar Performance Transmissions is seeking a full-time Manual Machinist / Lathe Operator to join our team in Akron, Ohio. We are looking for a skilled machinist with hands-on experience operating manual lathes who takes pride in precision craftsmanship and producing high-quality work.
This position is ideal for someone who understands tight tolerances, enjoys working independently, and is committed to delivering consistent, accurate results. The components you machine will be used in high-performance transmission applications where quality and attention to detail are critical.

Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate manual lathes to machine steel, aluminum, and specialty alloys
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and work orders
- Measure, inspect, and verify dimensions using micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring tools
- Perform threading, facing, turning, boring, grooving, and other manual lathe operations
- Maintain equipment, tooling, and a clean, organized work area
- Collaborate with engineering and production teams to ensure accuracy and efficiency
- Troubleshoot machining issues and make necessary adjustments to setups and processes
- Follow all safety procedures and quality standards
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience operating manual lathes in a production or job-shop environment
- Strong understanding of machining principles, speeds and feeds, and material behavior
- Ability to hold tight tolerances and produce repeatable, high-quality results
- Proficiency with precision measuring instruments
- Experience with manual mills, surface grinders, or other manual machine tools is a plus
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment to quality workmanship
- Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
