Job Description
The Credit Officer will be responsible for supporting the commercial credit risk management function by evaluating commercial lending opportunities, assessing portfolio risk, and providing independent credit recommendations. This role requires strong analytical skills, sound judgment, and the ability to identify emerging business and industry trends that may affect borrower performance and credit quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze and spread commercial financial statements for existing and prospective borrowers.
- Prepare comprehensive written credit analyses for new loans, renewals, modifications, and annual reviews.
- Assess borrower financial performance, repayment capacity, and overall creditworthiness.
- Identify business, industry, and market trends that may impact credit quality and lending decisions.
- Provide independent recommendations regarding credit structure, loan feasibility, collateral requirements, repayment terms, and pricing considerations.
- Monitor portfolio credit quality and review interim financial reporting to identify potential risk concerns.
- Maintain and validate loan risk ratings to ensure accurate reflection of portfolio risk exposure.
- Participate in loan committee meetings and support commercial lending teams with credit-related guidance.
- Attend client meetings alongside commercial banking officers when appropriate.
- Ensure compliance with internal credit policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Support audits, regulatory examinations, reporting initiatives, and other credit risk management activities as needed.
- Assist in the development, mentoring, and training of team members within the credit administration function.
- Collaborate with loan documentation and loan operations staff to ensure accurate and compliant loan processing.
- Manage multiple priorities and systems while maintaining high-quality work and meeting established deadlines.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
- 3-5 years of experience in commercial credit analysis, credit underwriting, credit risk management, lending, or bank examination.
- Experience analyzing commercial financial statements and evaluating commercial lending opportunities.
- Strong understanding of commercial credit principles, loan structures, and risk assessment methodologies.
- Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment when evaluating credit risks and recommending lending decisions.
- Proficiency with financial analysis tools, banking systems, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
Preferred
- Commercial underwriting experience.
- Experience working primarily within commercial banking rather than consumer lending.
- Agricultural lending or agricultural credit experience.
- Knowledge of loan documentation and commercial loan administration processes.
- Experience participating in loan committees or credit approval processes.
- Prior experience mentoring junior credit professionals or supporting staff development initiatives.
