Tax Accountant / Experienced Tax Preparer
Monteith Wealth, LLC — Bozeman, Montana
$80,000–$105,000 base salary + significant performance/tax-season bonus
Full-time | In-office
Monteith Wealth is looking for an experienced tax professional to join our growing tax practice in Bozeman.
We are not looking for someone we need to teach tax preparation from the ground up. We are looking for someone who already has meaningful professional tax experience and can contribute from the beginning.
You do not need to know everything. You do need to understand tax returns, be able to think through what you are preparing, recognize when something does not look right, and communicate comfortably with clients.
What You'll Do
- Prepare individual income tax returns, including more complex Form 1040 returns
- Carefully review your own work before submitting returns for final review
- Communicate directly with clients by phone and email
- Request missing information and help clients work through routine tax questions
- Review tax-return results and be able to explain why a client owes money, is receiving a refund, or experienced a significant change from the prior year
- Identify unusual items or potential problems that require additional review
- Assist with extensions, amended returns, notices, estimates, and other tax-related work
- Potentially assist with business returns and bookkeeping depending on experience
What We're Looking For
- At least 2 years of professional tax-preparation experience
- Strong individual income tax preparation experience
- Ability to work independently and take responsibility for the quality of your work
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work directly with clients
- Good judgment and the ability to understand the tax return rather than simply enter information into tax software
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn
Additional experience will be rewarded accordingly. Candidates with 5+ years of experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
The following are preferred but not required:
- CPA or EA credential
- S corporation, partnership, C corporation, trust, or other business-return experience
- Experience reviewing returns prepared by other tax professionals
- QuickBooks or bookkeeping experience
- Tax-planning experience
We care much more about whether you can actually do the work than whether your background fits a perfect checklist.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary of $80,000–$105,000, depending on experience and capabilities
- Significant tax-season/performance bonus opportunity
- We believe exceptional work should be rewarded accordingly. Exceptional historical tax-season bonuses at our firm have reached $40,000. Bonuses vary based on individual contribution and firm performance and are not guaranteed.
- Dollar-for-dollar 401(k) employer match up to 6% of compensation
- Health insurance
- Family health coverage available through our high-deductible health plan
- Employer-funded HSA contribution for employees participating in the qualifying plan
- Generous PTO and substantial offseason flexibility
- Sundays off during tax season
- A substantially lighter offseason workload than a traditional public accounting busy season
How We Work
Tax season is busy, but we do not believe working until 8 or 9 every night should be the normal cost of having a career in tax.
We generally want our employees to be able to go home for dinner, and we take Sundays off during tax season. The offseason is considerably lighter, and we provide substantial flexibility and time off when workloads allow.
At the same time, we are growing aggressively. We work hard, expect high-quality work, and reward employees who make a meaningful contribution to the firm.
We are looking for tax professionals who take pride in doing excellent work, think critically, communicate well with clients, and want to be rewarded for the value they bring to the firm.
This position is based in our Bozeman office and is not a remote position.
