Position Summary
The Equipment Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating a variety of heavy construction equipment including skid steers, mini to large excavators, skip loaders, padfoot rollers, and double steel drum rollers. This role is a core member of B&M Civil’s grading and earthwork crew, performing excavation, grading, compaction, and underground utility installation. Operators are expected to execute precise subgrade and AB preparation, as well as assist with the excavation and installation of underground storm drain systems including storm drain pipe, manholes, and drain inlets. The Equipment Operator plays a vital role in delivering projects on time, on grade, and built to specification.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate a variety of heavy equipment such as: - Skid steers, compact track loaders, and skip loaders - Mini, medium, and large excavators - Padfoot and double drum rollers
- Excavate and install underground storm drain systems, including: - Trenching to proper depth and alignment per plans and grade stakes - Installing and compacting bedding material - Setting and installing storm drain pipe to line and grade - Installing precast and cast-in-place manholes and drain inlets - Backfilling and compacting in lifts to achieve required densities - Checking grade with laser and/or story pole before and after placement - Ensuring trench safety and shoring requirements are met
- Perform rough and fine grading of native soil and AB using a laser level and/or by reading grade stakes
- Compact subgrade and AB to meet density requirements using appropriate equipment and techniques
- Conduct daily equipment walkarounds and pre-operation inspections
- Maintain cleanliness and proper function of assigned equipment
- Assist in loading/unloading equipment and materials on job sites as needed
- Communicate with foremen and grade checkers to ensure grade tolerances and production goals are met
- Work in coordination with crew members to support efficient jobsite progress
- Follow all safety procedures and company policies
- Identify and report any maintenance or mechanical issues immediately
- Submit accurate daily timecards and equipment hours
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of experience operating heavy equipment on civil construction projects
- Strong working knowledge of excavation, grading, and compaction methods
- Ability to shoot grade using a laser level and read grade stakes
- Familiarity with OSHA safety practices and procedures
- Valid California driver’s license with clean driving record (Class A or B a plus)
- Ability to work outdoors in variable weather and site conditions
- Strong communication skills and team mindset
- Punctual, reliable, and professional demeanor
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with storm drain and underground utility installation
- Current OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
- Mechanical aptitude for basic equipment troubleshooting
Pay: $35.00 - $50.00 per hour
