Free Press Publishing Inc. is looking for general assignment reporters for our Cheney Free Press, Lincoln County Record-Times and Ritzville Adams County Journal newspapers. These are truly general assignment positions, reporting on local government, schools, hospitals, crime and courts, agriculture and business, and community and sporting events in rural Eastern Washington. Our communities have an abundance of news to chase from water and agriculture, drought and wildfire, to highway crashes and shutdowns, to local government, festivals and sports.
These are in-person positions and require living within our coverage area.
The successful candidates will have solid time-management skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. They will write multiple stories daily, while keeping up a police blotter, court reports and other public records. They will be able to balance traditional news coverage with digital and social media. Photography and pagination skills are a plus.
From high plains desert to rolling hills, lakes and timberland, our newspapers cover five Eastern Washington wheat counties, where small-town living is at its best. Our readers are fiercely loyal, with about 80% of homes getting the printed newspaper each week in most of our core markets. This is farm country, where people get up early and work hard — then play harder when and where appropriate. Here, neighbors still help neighbors and life revolves around local events and sports. The cost of living in our communities is lower than most places in the state. And for the outdoorsman, great fishing, hunting, camping and hiking is nearby.
Our reporters are traditional "professional observers" providing the play-by-play of life in our rural communities. Can your prose make our readers feel as those they are beside you at a meeting, event or sports? Are you well-versed in AP style and inverted pyramid writing? Can you multi-task and meet strict deadlines? Do you have what it takes to provide the coverage our readers expect and deserve? And are you interested in living and working in a safe, rural community, removed from the problems facing cities and suburban areas? If so, we want to hear from you.
