Safety Ambassadors serve as a highly visible, non-law enforcement presence focused on maintaining a safe, welcoming, and respectful environment for the surrounding community.
The U.N. Plaza Dog Park is a fully enclosed, off-leash play area spanning approximately ¾ of an acre and serves as the only fenced dog recreation facility in the Civic Center area. This role combines elements of safety ambassador work, public engagement, urban park management, and canine behavioral awareness.
The ideal candidate has experience working with dogs in dynamic public environments and possesses strong communication, de-escalation, and observational skills.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Community Safety & Presence
- Maintain a consistent, high-visibility presence within and around the dog park
- Help promote a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment for all park users
- Engage professionally with dog owners, visitors, unhoused individuals, and surrounding businesses
- Observe and report quality-of-life concerns, safety hazards, suspicious behavior, or violations of park rules
- Coordinate with supervisors, dispatch, city services, or emergency responders when appropriate
- Perform cleaning tasks around the in and around the dog park
Conflict Resolution & De-Escalation
- Utilize calm, professional communication techniques to de-escalate tense situations
- Mediate disputes between park users regarding dog behavior, park etiquette, or rule compliance
- Maintain a non-threatening and service-oriented approach in high-stress environments
- Assist in preserving safe use of the enclosed dog area for both animals and visitors
Canine Safety & Handling Awareness
- Monitor off-leash dog interactions and identify signs of escalating canine aggression or unsafe behavior
- Assist with maintaining safe gate entry and exit procedures to prevent dogs from escaping
- Recognize signs of canine distress, overheating, illness, or unsafe pack dynamics
- Support safe intervention practices during dog conflicts using approved non-contact or low-risk methods
- Educate park users on responsible dog handling and park etiquette when appropriate
Reporting & Documentation
- Complete accurate incident reports and activity logs using a smartphone or reporting platform
- Document safety incidents, injuries, aggressive dog behavior, maintenance concerns, or medical emergencies
- Communicate real-time safety concerns to supervisors and dispatch personnel
- Assist with documenting resource referrals or outreach interactions when applicable
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
The ideal candidate is calm under pressure, highly observant, physically active, and comfortable interacting with diverse populations in a busy urban environment. Successful candidates should demonstrate sound judgment, professionalism, and confidence working around multiple off-leash dogs at once.
Required Qualifications
- Valid California Guard Card
- Minimum 2 years of experience in security, public safety, hospitality, animal handling, or related field
- Demonstrated experience with dog walking, dog training, kennel operations, veterinary support, rescue work, or managing multiple dogs simultaneously
- Strong verbal communication and conflict de-escalation skills
- Comfortable working outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions
- Ability to walk and remain active throughout an 8-hour shift
- Basic smartphone and reporting proficiency
- Must be at least 18 years old
- High school diploma or GED
- Ability to pass a background check and drug screening prior to employment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in urban parks, BID/CBD ambassador programs, animal care, or community outreach
- Knowledge of canine body language and behavior
- CPR/First Aid certification
- Customer service or hospitality experience
