Position Summary
Sparklight is seeking a skilled and safety-focused Cable Splicer to join our field operations team. The Cable Splicer will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of aerial and underground fiber optic and coaxial cable systems that support Sparklight's broadband, internet, voice, and video services. This role requires strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in outdoor environments while adhering to company safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, splice, terminate, and test fiber optic and coaxial cable networks.
- Perform aerial and underground cable construction, maintenance, and restoration activities.
- Read and interpret network prints, schematics, utility maps, and construction drawings.
- Troubleshoot and repair service interruptions, signal loss, and network performance issues.
- Utilize splicing equipment, OTDRs, power meters, fusion splicers, and other testing tools to ensure network integrity.
- Perform cable preparation, fiber identification, ribbon splicing, enclosure installation, and cable routing.
- Conduct preventative maintenance and inspection of network infrastructure.
- Ensure all work meets Sparklight quality standards, engineering specifications, and industry best practices.
- Document splicing records, test results, as-built documentation, and daily work activities.
- Coordinate with construction crews, engineers, contractors, and network operations personnel.
- Respond to network outages and emergency restoration efforts, including participation in on-call rotations when needed.
- Follow all OSHA regulations, company safety procedures, and safe work practices.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 2+ years of cable splicing experience in telecommunications, broadband, fiber optic, or utility environments.
- Experience with fusion splicing, fiber optic testing, and cable plant maintenance.
- Knowledge of HFC (Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial) and FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) networks preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, splice diagrams, and utility maps.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to climb ladders, work from bucket trucks, and perform physically demanding tasks.
Preferred Qualifications
- Fiber optic certifications (FOA, CFOT, or equivalent).
- Experience working in broadband, cable television, or telecommunications networks.
- CDL or ability to obtain one.
- Experience with aerial and underground construction practices.
- Knowledge of network maintenance and outage restoration procedures.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and kneel for extended periods.
- Comfortable working at heights, in confined spaces, and around active roadways.
- Ability to work overtime, weekends, and emergency call-outs as required.
