Staff Accountant
Position Summary:
The Staff Accountant is responsible for performing day-to-day accounting functions to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the organization's financial records. This position supports the Controller in maintaining the general ledger, preparing financial reports, processing journal entries, reconciling accounts, processing payroll, and ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and grant requirements.
Responsibilities:
General Accounting
- Assist the Controller with the preparation and posting of journal entries.
- Assist with maintaining the general ledger and supporting the accuracy and integrity of financial records.
- Assist with monthly bank, credit card, and balance sheet account reconciliations.
- Support the Controller with month-end and year-end closing activities, including preparing schedules and gathering supporting documentation.
- Review assigned financial transactions for accuracy, completeness, and appropriate account coding and bring discrepancies to the Controller’s attention.
- Maintain supporting documentation for financial transactions.
Grant Accounting Support
- Assist with the financial administration of federal, state, local, and private grants by tracking expenditures and ensuring costs are charged to the appropriate funding sources.
- Coordinate with Controller to monitor grant budgets and expenditures to help ensure compliance with grant agreements, funding restrictions, and organizational policies. Assist in tracking grant expenditures by funding source.
- Assist with reconciliation of grant activity to the general ledger, investigate discrepancies, and prepare necessary journal entries or corrections.
- Support the Controller in preparing financial documentation for grant reporting, drawdowns, and reimbursement requests.
- Review and verify that expenses are accurately coded to the appropriate grants, programs, cost centers, and chart of account segments.
- Ensure expenses are coded accurately to the appropriate grants and cost centers.
Internal Controls
- Follow established internal controls and accounting procedures.
- Support the Controller with internal and external financial audits, including gathering requested documentation, preparing schedules, and responding to information requests.
- Assist in identifying opportunities to improve accounting processes.
- Maintain confidentiality of financial information.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- 5-7 years of accounting experience required.
- 5 years Nonprofit accounting experience required.
- Experience with grant accounting is required.
- Familiarity with Early Head Start program requirements preferred.
- Experience using Sage50, Bill.Com, Paycor and Microsoft Excel strongly preferred.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to meet multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to establish respectful, collaborative relationships with staff, parents, service providers, and community partners.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time-management abilities.
- Successful completion of: BCI and FBI background checks, physical exam, and pre-employment drug screening.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working at a computer.
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 20 pounds.

Pay: $60,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
