GENERAL FUNCTIONS: This position is responsible for the preparation, planning, and instruction of assigned Premium Fitness classes, facilitating member involvement, and relationship building, assisting in the development of member small group communities, and providing excellent customer service. Certified Premium Fitness Instructors are responsible for exemplifying professionalism and leadership in the areas of fitness and exercise and serving as a resource for staff and members.
JOB LOCATION: Walnut Creek Family YMCA
SHIFTS / CLASS AVAILABLE: Kettlebell, TRX, and/or small group training classes early mornings as well as evenings or weekends.
HOURLY RATE RANGE: $19.00-$25.00/hour based on qualifications and experience.
CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS: June 3, 2026 - Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Design, plan, prepare, and instruct assigned Premium Fitness classes.

Follow proper registration procedures to ensure fees are collected.

Create a welcoming and inclusive class environment.

Assist members in developing realistic, attainable goals and continually modifying training objectives.

Promote member engagement by encouraging involvement in related Y programs and small communities.

Assume a leadership role for members, demonstrating professionalism and Premium Fitness expertise.

Encourage and support members as they strive to attain their personal fitness and wellness goals.

Set up equipment or facility before class and store or secure equipment upon completion of class.

Instruct members on proper form, technique and execution of fitness plan exercises for optimal performance/results.

"Spot” and/or perform exercises with member for the benefit of the member’s workout.

Ensure safety is a priority in instructional methods used and educate participants on proper form, anatomy, contraindications, and modification of moves.

Assist with training and orientation of new Y staff.

Maintain records as directed by supervisor or designated staff person.

Know all emergency procedures and be able to demonstrate them.

Complete accident/incident reports and submits to supervisor or designated staff person.

Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor or designated staff person.

Demonstrate and support the objectives of the Association as embodied in the mission statement and values.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to read, write, and perform simple mathematical functions

Must be at least 21 years of age
-
Be able to use a computer to do such tasks as class information, time clock, and on-line training.

Current personal training certification or a Bachelor’s degree, with verifiable experience training clients - See Below for Details:
- Certification from a National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA)– accredited personal training program or a personal training/fitness coaching certificate reviewed and approved through the YMCA of Greater Des Moines internal review process.

Current Exercise Physiologist certification from ACSM, ASEP, or another approved agency, with a minimum of one (1) year of active client training experience.

Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, with a minimum of one (1) year of active client training experience.
- Current Red Cross CPR/First Aid/AED certification OR equivalent – prior to starting.

Child Abuse Prevention Training - prior to starting if hired, and maintained annually.

Additional training to be completed within the first 30 days and maintained afterwards
