Registered Veterinary Technician/Nurse (RVT)
Individuals in this position will have completed a two-year Associate's degree from an AVMA-accredited Veterinary Technology program, passed the VTNE and NCVMB examinations, and hold a current North Carolina veterinary technician license, or be eligible to sit for the NCVMB examination and obtain licensure. Candidates must be in good standing with the NCVMB.
Minimum Required Skills
- Accurately obtain TPRs and appropriately triage patients.
- Safely and effectively restrain patients.
- Place intravenous catheters and calculate injectable and oral medications as prescribed by a veterinarian.
- Calculate basic fluid rates and program IV fluid pumps.
- Monitor routine anesthesia for healthy patients undergoing elective procedures with minimal supervision.
- Induce and intubate patients.
- Demonstrate knowledge of standard vaccination protocols, common disease processes, zoonotic diseases, and biohazard safety.
- Understand the fundamentals of CPR and be willing to expand those skills through continuing education provided by the hospital.
Additional Desired Skills (may vary based on experience)
- Independently monitor anesthesia for medically compromised patients and urgent care surgeries when needed.
- Understand various premedication protocols and calculate and administer anesthetic premedications under doctor supervision.
- Be trained in CPR protocols and comfortable serving in an active CPR role, with at least RECOVER BLS certification.
- Proficiently carry out advanced hospitalization treatments, including blood transfusions, antivenom therapy, DKA protocols, CRIs, and similar advanced patient care.
- Troubleshoot medical equipment and confidently operate syringe pumps, CRI pumps, and related equipment.
- Serve as a leader while on shift by mentoring, training, and supporting fellow nursing staff.
- Hold RECOVER ALS certification.
