Position Summary
Join our team as an Emergency Telecommunicator, where you will play a critical role in protecting life and property by serving as the vital link between the public and emergency responders. This position receives and processes emergency and non-emergency calls, coordinates police, fire, and EMS response, provides pre-arrival instructions to callers, and supports public safety operations in a fast-paced communications environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive and process emergency and non-emergency calls using enhanced 9-1-1 and Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems
- Dispatch police, fire, EMS, and other emergency resources while maintaining accurate status information on personnel and equipment
- Gather, analyze, and relay critical information to responding agencies in a timely and accurate manner
- Provide pre-arrival instructions and support to callers during medical emergencies, accidents, crimes, and other critical incidents
- Prioritize calls for service based on urgency and coordinate multi-agency responses when needed
- Operate GIS, radio, telephone, and computer systems to support emergency communications operations
- Enter and maintain accurate information in local, state, and federal databases, including the Missouri Uniform Law Enforcement System (MULES)
- Monitor weather alert systems, emergency notification equipment, and other technical systems and alarms
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Specialized coursework in general office practices, computer data entry, filing, accounting, bookkeeping, or related areas preferred
- Ability to obtain and maintain MULES Modular Training (Entry and Inquiry), Emergency Medical Dispatch Certification, APCO Basic Telecommunicator Certification, and required local system training within six (6) months of employment
- No disqualifying criminal history; must meet department background standards
- Strong communication, multitasking, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in high-stress situations
Additional Information
- No prior dispatch experience required; successful candidates must be able to complete required training and certifications within established timeframes
- Rotating 12-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs
- Must maintain confidentiality of sensitive and protected information
- Telephone required for emergency call-out purposes
