Job Summary:
The Medical Billing Specialist is responsible for managing patient billing and claims processing to ensure timely reimbursement for medical services. This role involves preparing and submitting claims to insurance companies, reviewing accounts for accuracy, following up on unpaid claims, and working with patients on billing inquiries.
Job Duties:
Prepare and submit accurate insurance claims using electronic billing software.
Review and verify patient billing information for accuracy and completeness.
Post insurance and patient payments, adjustments, and denials.
Monitor unpaid claims and follow up with insurance companies to ensure timely payment.
Resolve billing issues with insurance companies, patients, and internal staff.
Verify insurance eligibility and benefits when necessary.
Respond to patient inquiries regarding billing and insurance coverage.
Maintain confidentiality and security of patient data in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
Generate monthly billing reports and assist with financial audits.
Collaborate with coding staff to ensure correct CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding for claims.
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required; associate degree in healthcare administration or related field preferred.
Certification in medical billing and coding (e.g., CPC, CPB, CMRS) is a plus.
1–2 years of experience in medical billing or a similar role.
Strong knowledge of insurance guidelines, including Medicare, Medicaid, and private payers.
Proficient in medical billing software (e.g., Kareo, Athena, Epic, NextGen).
Familiarity with medical terminology and coding systems (CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS).
Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
