Job Summary
Chapterhouse Cafe & Gallery is seeking a friendly, creative, and customer-focused Barista to join our café team. The Barista will prepare quality espresso beverages, brewed coffee, tea, specialty drinks, and café food while providing warm and attentive customer service. The ideal candidate enjoys working in a welcoming café and gallery environment, has a passion for coffee and hospitality, and can maintain excellent service during busy periods.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare espresso beverages, brewed coffee, pour-over coffee, cold brew, tea, and specialty drinks according to café standards.
- Operate and adjust commercial espresso machines and grinders to maintain beverage consistency.
- Steam and texture milk properly and maintain professional beverage presentation.
- Greet customers warmly, take orders accurately, and provide knowledgeable recommendations.
- Explain coffee selections, brewing methods, seasonal beverages, and café offerings to customers.
- Operate the POS system and accurately process cash, credit card, and mobile payments.
- Prepare and serve pastries, light food items, and other café offerings according to established procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary coffee bar, counter, dining area, and service stations.
- Restock coffee beans, milk, syrups, pastries, cups, lids, napkins, and other café supplies.
- Assist with opening, closing, cleaning, and daily café preparation procedures.
- Monitor beverage and food quality and report product or equipment concerns to management.
- Assist with inventory counts, product rotation, and proper storage of café supplies.
- Support café events, gallery activities, community gatherings, and special promotions when needed.
- Maintain a welcoming and respectful environment for café and gallery visitors.
- Follow food safety, sanitation, allergen-awareness, and workplace safety procedures.
- Work collaboratively with baristas, café staff, gallery personnel, and management.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous barista, café, restaurant, retail, or customer-service experience is preferred but not required.
- Basic knowledge of espresso preparation, coffee brewing, and milk steaming.
- Friendly, professional, and customer-focused attitude.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to multitask in a busy café environment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to operate POS systems and commercial coffee equipment.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift café supplies as required.
- Flexible availability, including mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events.
- Legally authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in a specialty coffee shop, independent café, or arts-focused hospitality environment.
- Familiarity with espresso machines, grinders, and manual brewing methods.
- Knowledge of coffee origins, roasting, brewing, and flavor profiles.
- Basic latte art and espresso-extraction skills.
- Food Handler Certification is an asset where applicable.
- Experience with POS systems and cash handling.
