CLASS SUMMARY: The firefighter role is responsible for combating fires (including driving and operating fire apparatus), performing rescue operations, and conducting city ordinance and fire code inspections. Responsibilities may include performance-based training; providing medical care as an Emergency Medical Technician; responding to hazardous material incidents; performing fire code and city ordinance inspections. Additional duties involve educational outreach on fire safety, maintaining equipment and facilities, and fulfilling daily firehouse tasks as directed by their supervisor.SCOPE OF IMPACT: The duties and responsibilities of this job are performed with latitude for independent judgement in accordance with Department and City policies, Federal, State and Local regulations and are based on detailed knowledge of department operations. Work is subject to periodic review by the supervisor, who provides input on approval of recommendations and discusses assignments, priorities and work.

CLASSIFICATION ESSENTIAL DUTIES: This job description is intended to represent only the key areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the business needs of the department.Responds to all types of calls related to fire and other emergencies, including hazardous material incidents; work may involve performing rescue operations, using techniques and operating equipment that prevent, control, and stop property damage; providing medical care as an Emergency Medical Technician; and serving as a hazardous material technician Ensures the proper condition, maintenance, and appearance of apparatus, vehicles, and equipment; prepares apparatus and equipment for immediate response. Participates in performance-based training, including daily physical fitness training and on-going fire, rescue, and medical training. Performs fire code and city ordinance inspections; work may involve inspecting vehicles, equipment, and facilities, including schools, homes, and businesses Conducts educational programs and/or home visits to convey fire safety, fire prevention, and other public safety information; and/or install safety equipment Participates in the daily functions related to maintaining the fire house, which includes performing janitorial duties, including cleaning assigned areas of the fire house and grounds; installing equipment/appliances; washing clothes; performing snow removal and/or salting duties; setting up, tearing down, and/or moving around furniture and equipment; carrying out pickups and drop offs; and performing minor painting and repair work Prepares, maintains, and/or updates reports, pre-plans, records, files, and other documentation; and maintains, updates, and/or enters standard information into/from databases and other reporting systems Performs administrative duties, to include researching requested information, assisting in developing/updating policies and ordinances, and updating websites and other data sources. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
