Job Overview
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Asphalt Field Density Technician to join our construction team. In this vital role, you will be responsible for conducting on-site testing and quality control measures to ensure asphalt paving projects meet industry standards and project specifications. Your expertise will help guarantee the durability, safety, and longevity of roadway surfaces by accurately measuring asphalt density and related parameters. Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform sampling and testing of HMA (Hot Mix Asphalt) in both field and laboratory settings, including the use of nuclear density gauges and core cutting equipment.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain nuclear density and moisture gauges to evaluate construction materials (soil, asphalt, and concrete) for density and moisture content.
- Collaborate with paving crews to collect box samples, cut in-place cores, and transport samples to third-party laboratories or asphalt plants for testing.
- Conduct verification coring on a daily or weekly basis to correlate nuclear gauge compaction results with laboratory core test results.
- Coordinate with asphalt plants to obtain mix-specific gravity data.
- Transport, store, and maintain nuclear gauges in compliance with NRC regulations.
- Prepare compaction testing reports and submit required documentation in accordance with DOT standards.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 2–3 years of direct experience in construction materials testing, with a focus on roadway construction and asphalt compaction testing.
- Current certifications including MARTCP, VDOT Field Levels I and II, and Nuclear Gauge Operator Safety Training. Hazmat certification from Troxler Electronic Laboratories, APNGA, or Northeast Technical Services is required.
- Willingness to work overtime, nights, and weekends as required to meet project demands and deadlines.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening and comply with random testing requirements throughout employment.
