The Division of General Internal Medicine in the Department of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Coordinator 1 to join their team.
About this Opportunity:
Reporting to the Principal Investigator, Research Coordinator 1 will primarily support a study on substance use screening and diagnosis in Washington prisons but may provide coordination support across other projects.
The Research Coordinator’s responsibility will involve traveling to prisons in western Washington to enroll participants in a study about alcohol and substance use, screening potential participants for enrollment, completing consent processes with potential participants, and administering the data collection tool, which includes a portion that is interviewer-administered. The Research Coordinator will also support the coordination of this study and other studies that Dr. Jack’s team is conducting in Washington prisons, assisting with maintaining study records, supporting the development of standard operating procedures and protocols, and working with other team members to ensure that the study runs smoothly.
Job location: This position is based in the greater Olympia area and is a hybrid position. Approximately 80% of job responsibilities (up to 4 days/week) will be spent collecting data at prisons in Shelton, Washington (approximately 2/3 of data collection days) and Gig Harbor, Washington (approximately 1/3 of data collection days) in-person. Additional job responsibilities can be conducted remotely with occasional in-person meetings with the full study team in Seattle.
Key Responsibilities
Study participant coordination (80%):
- Participate in training on the data collection processes
- Travel to Washington Corrections Center (Shelton, WA) and Washington Corrections Center for Women (Gig Harbor, WA) for all study data collection activities
- Communicate directly with stakeholders in the Washington Department of Corrections
- Document and maintain policies and procedures for patient enrollment and protocol implementation to ensure that data collection meets Good Clinical Practice guidelines
- Complete all enrollment and data collection activities according to standard operating procedures
- Screen potential participants for enrollment
- Complete informed consent process with potential participants
- Administer data collection tools, including administering a verbal interview about prior alcohol and substance use
- Work to create a comfortable atmosphere for and build appropriate rapport with study participants
Project coordination activities (15%):
- Help arrange and plan study team meetings and coordinate between multiple members of the study team
- Support the creation of participant-facing study materials and updating of study protocols and standard operating procedures
- Support the development of reports for study sponsor and other collaborating partners
Dissemination (5%):
- Participate in literature review to prepare for manuscript publication
- Support manuscript preparation and publication, including using reference management software
Required Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in a related field and one year of relevant experience.
Additional Qualifications
- Experience in a patient or client-facing role, working directly with service users
- Personal vehicle and valid driver’s license
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills
- Familiarity with research
- Ability to work as a collaborative part of a scholarly team
- Ability to use survey software for data capture and organization
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with people who are directly affected by the criminal-legal system, substance use, and/or alcohol use
- Experience conducting research and/or clinical interviews
- Experience with REDCap data management system
- Training in ethical conduct of research with human subjects
- Prior experience with academic writing and/or publishing
Compensation, Benefits and Position Details
Pay Range Minimum:
$55,944.00 annual
Pay Range Maximum:
$90,000.00 annual
