The Senior Tax Manager has all the responsibilities of a Manager and is considered to be a "Director in training". The Senior Tax Manager may be asked to attend Directors meetings and share in confidential Firm information.
Tax Manager responsibilities include:
- Assume responsibility for the administration and execution of one or more large and/or complex tax engagements.
- Resolve most normal and complex tax problems through sources available within and without the Firm's library.
- Serve as technical advisor in providing advice or research assistance to others in moderate to more complex tax questions.
- Supervise a number of engagements at one time.
- Supervise, train and evaluate personnel assigned to the engagement.
- Prepare tax returns and readily resolve most tax questions through knowledge gained or research.
- Work directly with the Internal Revenue Service agents and other tax authorities in tax examinations.
- Review completed tax returns for final Director review.
- Meet with assigned business clients and large individual tax clients at least annually for tax planning.
- Assist clients in complying with federal, state and local tax requirements.
- Monitor filing deadlines.
- Keep staff advised of tax developments.
- Provide specific guidelines for special tax engagements, such as employee benefit plans, incorporation and trusts.
- Monitor progress of engagements in relation to budgets and due dates.
- Prepare billings for tax clients.
- Motivate and assist staff in professional development.
- Look for opportunities to provide additional services to clients.
- Represent the Firm in professional and service development.
- Develop the Firm's reputation and his/her own through conducting seminars, making speeches, writing articles and similar activities.
- Assist Directors with practice development and practice management.
