This position offers the opportunity to build JLT LLC's research funding program from the ground up while working directly with executive leadership on advanced technology, engineering, manufacturing, and commercialization initiatives.
Position Summary
JLT LLC is seeking an experienced Director of NSF Grants & Research Development to identify, develop, and manage federal grant opportunities, with a primary focus on the National Science Foundation (NSF), including SBIR and STTR programs.
The successful candidate will lead proposal development, coordinate multidisciplinary teams, establish strategic partnerships, and help position the company for long-term research funding.
Compensation
Compensation Structure
This position begins as a contract, performance-based engagement.
Compensation during the initial engagement will be based on agreed-upon performance milestones and successful grant development activities, as outlined in the contractor agreement.
Upon successful grant funding and company growth, the position is expected to transition into a full-time salaried leadership role, subject to business needs, mutual agreement, and available funding.

ResponsibilitiesFederal Grant Strategy
- Identify NSF, SBIR, STTR, and other federal funding opportunities.
- Develop JLT LLC's federal funding strategy.
- Maintain an annual grants calendar.
- Evaluate funding solicitations and recommend strategic opportunities.
- Advise executive leadership on funding priorities.
Proposal Development
- Lead proposal development from concept through submission.
- Prepare competitive technical narratives.
- Coordinate engineering, scientific, financial, and administrative proposal sections.
- Develop proposal budgets and budget justifications.
- Ensure compliance with sponsor requirements and submission deadlines.
Research & Partnership Development
- Build relationships with universities, research institutions, laboratories, and industry partners.
- Coordinate collaboration agreements and letters of support.
- Support technology commercialization planning.
- Identify strategic research partnerships.
Federal Agency Engagement
- Attend NSF webinars, workshops, conferences, and informational sessions.
- Stay current on NSF funding priorities and proposal requirements.
- Monitor federal funding opportunities.
- Maintain awareness of federal grant regulations and best practices.
Internal Collaboration
- Work directly with executive leadership.
- Coordinate proposal planning meetings.
- Collaborate with engineers, technical writers, finance personnel, and product development teams.
- Develop standardized proposal templates and internal grant procedures.
Post-Award Support
If grant funding is awarded:
- Assist with grant administration.
- Coordinate sponsor reporting.
- Monitor project milestones.
- Support budget tracking and compliance.
- Coordinate with internal project teams.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science, Business, Public Administration, Research Administration, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Demonstrated experience developing competitive federal grant proposals.
- Excellent technical writing and editing skills.
- Strong project management and organizational skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with NSF SBIR/STTR proposal development.
- Knowledge of Research.gov and federal proposal submission processes.
- Experience with federal funding agencies such as NSF, NIH, DOE, DoD, NASA, USDA, or similar organizations.
- Experience supporting commercialization of innovative technologies.
- Experience working with engineering, manufacturing, or technology organizations.
