SUMMARY:
The Paraprofessional assists teachers and other instructional staff in supporting the educational, behavioral, social, emotional, and physical development of students. This position is initially assigned as a one-on-one (1:1) aide to support the needs of an individual student.
Responsibilities may include providing individualized instructional support, assisting with academic and behavioral interventions, supporting students with disabilities and medical needs, monitoring student activities, and helping maintain a safe and productive learning environment. As student needs and district staffing requirements evolve, assignments may change and may include one-on-one student support, classroom or building-based assistance, small-group instruction, or other specialized student services.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The job duties listed are typical examples of the work performed by staff in this position. Not all duties assigned to every position in this job are included, nor is it expected that all positions will be assigned every duty.
Instructional Support
- Assist teachers and other instructional staff in implementing lesson plans and classroom activities.
- Provide instructional support to individual students and small groups under the direction of a teacher.
- Provide one-on-one support for students as assigned.
- Work with students on academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and intervention goals.
- Assist with homework support and academic reinforcement activities.
- Support interventionists and instructional staff with student assessments and interventions.
- Administer, monitor, score, and record assessments and classroom assignments as directed.
Student Support Services
- Support and implement student behavior intervention plans, accommodations, and modifications.
- Follow student Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), Section 504 Plans, and medical plans as directed.
- Assist students with basic personal care and medical needs as authorized and trained.
- Serve as a positive role model for students.
- Escort students to and from classrooms and other school locations as required.
Classroom Management, Supervision, and Safety
- Observe and monitor student activities in classrooms and other school settings.
- Assist in maintaining order, discipline, and a positive learning environment.
- Enforce district, building, and classroom rules and procedures.
- Provide supervision and support during transitions, arrivals, dismissals, lunch, recess, and other school activities.
- Assist in maintaining a safe environment for students and staff.
Recordkeeping, Communication, and Administrative Support
- Assist with documenting student accommodations, behavior logs, progress monitoring, and other required records.
- Maintain records, files, and progress reports as assigned.
- Assist with attendance, classroom organization, and preparation of instructional materials.
- Operate computers, instructional technology, audio/visual equipment, and other educational tools.
- Communicate effectively with teachers, administrators, support staff, and families as appropriate.
Professional Responsibilities
- Attend workshops, conferences, meetings, and training sessions as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
One of the following is required:
- Associate degree or equivalent as required by law (evidence is an official transcript); OR
- Completion of at least two years of academic study at a post-secondary institution earning at least 60 credits (evidence is an official transcript); OR
- Demonstration through a formal state assessment of the knowledge and ability to assist in reading, writing, and mathematics.
Strongly preferred qualifications include:
- Certificate in Early Childhood Development, Childhood Development, Education, or a related field.
- CPR and First Aid certification.
- Experience working with students in educational or child care settings.
- General knowledge and understanding of computers and educational technology.
