Produce Manager – Experienced
Grocery Outlet of Visitacion Valley – San Francisco, CA
Grocery Outlet of Visitacion Valley is seeking an experienced Produce Lead to take ownership of the day-to-day operation of our Produce Department.
This is not an entry-level position. Previous grocery produce experience is required.
We are willing to pay more for the right candidate who already has the experience, judgment, and leadership skills needed to successfully run a busy produce department.
Responsibilities
- Lead the daily operation of the Produce Department
- Place produce orders based on sales, inventory levels, seasonality, quality, and expected movement
- Identify fast- and slow-moving products and adjust ordering accordingly
- Maintain strong in-stock levels while minimizing shrink and product waste
- Receive and inspect produce deliveries for quality, shortages, and damaged product
- Obtain and follow up on vendor credits for damaged, spoiled, shorted, or unacceptable product
- Rotate all product properly using FIFO
- Monitor freshness and quality throughout the day
- Remove damaged, spoiled, or poor-quality product promptly
- Maintain full, clean, organized, and well-merchandised produce displays
- Execute price changes, signage changes, and promotional displays accurately and on time
- Break down pallets and organize backstock efficiently
- Train, direct, and support Produce Clerks
- Maintain department cleanliness, sanitation, organization, and food-safety standards
- Monitor inventory and communicate product or ordering concerns proactively
- Work with store leadership to improve sales, quality, shrink, and profitability
- Provide knowledgeable and friendly customer service
Required Qualifications
- Previous grocery produce department experience
- Produce ordering experience
- Produce receiving experience
- Experience managing inventory and backstock
- Experience controlling produce shrink and product waste
- Strong knowledge of produce quality, freshness, rotation, and proper handling
- Ability to identify damaged, spoiled, or poor-quality product
- Ability to identify fast- and slow-moving items and adjust ordering accordingly
- Experience with produce merchandising and maintaining attractive displays
- Experience executing price changes, signage changes, and promotional displays
- Experience handling delivery discrepancies and obtaining vendor credits
- Experience breaking down produce pallets and working deliveries
- Pallet jack experience
- Experience directing or training other employees
- Ability to independently manage daily department priorities
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Reliable, punctual, and dependable
- Flexible availability, including weekends and holidays
- Comfortable working in refrigerated environments
- Able to lift up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation
- Able to stand, walk, bend, reach, lift, and perform repetitive tasks throughout the workday, with or without reasonable accommodation
Bilingual or multilingual communication skills are a plus.
Who We're Looking For
We are looking for someone who already knows how to run produce.
You should be able to look at a department and understand what needs to be ordered, what is moving too slowly, what needs to be rotated or pulled, where shrink is occurring, and what needs to be done to improve presentation and sales.
A successful Produce Lead understands that a great produce department must be fresh, full, well-merchandised, properly ordered, clean, organized, and profitable.
