Core Hard / Technical Skills
- Legal research and analysis — Proficiency with Westlaw, LexisNexis (or equivalents), case law/statute research, cite-checking (Bluebook), and issue-spotting. Ability to determine whether authority is still good law.
- Document drafting and legal writing — Drafting pleadings, motions, discovery requests/responses (interrogatories, RFPs, RFAs), subpoenas, affidavits/declarations, correspondence, deposition summaries, and case summaries for attorney review. Strong proofreading, formatting, and citation accuracy.
- Discovery and e-discovery management — End-to-end handling of discovery: propounding/responding, document collection/review/production, privilege logs, redactions, and quality control. Hands-on experience with platforms such as Relativity, Everlaw, Concordance, or similar.
- Case and document management — Organizing large volumes of paper and electronic files, maintaining case chronologies, using case management systems (Clio, MyCase, PracticePanther, iManage, NetDocuments, etc.), and ensuring instant retrieval of materials.
- Court procedures and electronic filing — Deep knowledge of Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, relevant state/local rules, and e-filing systems (CM/ECF, PACER, state portals). Accurate calendaring of deadlines, statutes of limitations, and court schedules.
- Trial preparation and support — Building trial notebooks/binders, exhibit lists and demonstratives, witness coordination, deposition logistics, and using trial presentation tools (TrialDirector or similar). Experience supporting mediations, arbitrations, or trials is a strong plus.
- Technology proficiency — Advanced Microsoft Office (Word styles/TOCs/redlining/templates, Excel data handling, PowerPoint, Outlook), Adobe Acrobat Pro (OCR, redaction, PDF management), and familiarity with document management and collaboration tools.
Essential Soft Skills
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy — Catching errors in documents, filings, citations, and evidence tracking that could affect the case.
- Organization, time management, and prioritization — Highly skilled in managing multiple complex matters and competing deadlines without missing anything; strong calendaring and docket control. Able to politely help keep other staff on task when necessary.
- Critical thinking and problem-solving — Anticipating attorney needs, spotting inconsistencies or issues early, and proposing practical solutions rather than just reporting problems.
- Communication — Excellent professional written and verbal skills for interacting with attorneys, clients, opposing counsel, court staff, vendors, and witnesses. Able to project a professional demeanor even when under pressure.
- Confidentiality, ethics, and judgment — Strict adherence to ethical rules, handling sensitive information, and exercising sound independent judgment under attorney supervision.
- Resilience under pressure and adaptability — Performing accurately in fast-paced, high-stakes environments with shifting priorities and tight deadlines; ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Proactivity / “anticipation” — Experienced paralegals who prepare drafts, organize materials, or flag issues before being asked.
Additional Qualifications:
- Relevant experience in our practice areas (commercial, employment, personal injury, HOA, probate and estate matters, etc.) for 5 years or more is seen as a plus.
- Certifications (e.g., NALA CP, NFPA RP) or ABA-approved paralegal education is a plus.
- Excellent proficiency with the computer (Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe)
- Able to keep track of tasks performed in a timely manner for billing/timekeeping systems.
