Plumbing Maintenance Technician
(Federal Facilities Operations & Maintenance)
Overview
We are seeking a skilled Plumbing Maintenance Technician to support operations and maintenance activities within a high-performance federal research and laboratory environment. This position is responsible for performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and installation support for commercial and industrial plumbing systems serving mission-critical facilities.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience in commercial plumbing systems, preventive maintenance programs, troubleshooting, and corrective repairs within institutional, healthcare, laboratory, industrial, or government facilities.
This role works closely with facility management, Chief Engineers, subcontractors, and government representatives to ensure facility systems remain operational, compliant, and reliable.
Key Responsibilities
Plumbing Systems Operations & Maintenance
- Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, and repair of commercial and industrial plumbing systems.
- Maintain domestic water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, and specialty plumbing systems.
- Support operation and maintenance of pumps, valves, piping systems, fixtures, water heaters, expansion tanks, mixing valves, and related plumbing equipment.
- Perform repairs on faucets, flush valves, drains, piping, fixtures, and associated plumbing components.
- Assist with maintenance and repair of laboratory plumbing systems and specialty equipment as required.
- Support emergency plumbing repairs and response activities.
Preventive & Corrective Maintenance
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance in accordance with contract requirements and manufacturer recommendations.
- Respond to corrective maintenance work orders and service calls in a timely manner.
- Troubleshoot plumbing system failures and identify root causes of operational issues.
- Assist with identifying deficiencies and recommending repair or replacement solutions.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow OSHA, NFPA, and facility safety requirements while performing work activities.
- Support lockout/tagout procedures and safe work practices.
- Maintain compliance with applicable plumbing codes, environmental requirements, and federal facility regulations.
- Assist with identifying hazardous conditions and reporting safety concerns.
Facility & Team Support
- Coordinate with facility management, engineers, subcontractors, and other trades to support facility operations.
- Assist with project work, shutdowns, inspections, and facility upgrades.
- Support after-hours or emergency response activities when required.
- Maintain professional communication with building occupants, vendors, and government personnel.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of commercial, industrial, institutional, or facility plumbing maintenance experience.
- Strong knowledge of commercial plumbing systems and equipment.
- Experience troubleshooting and repairing plumbing system components.
- Ability to read blueprints, diagrams, and technical documents.
- Experience using maintenance management systems (CMMS) or computerized work order systems.
- Knowledge of plumbing safety practices and applicable codes.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
- Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Federal, healthcare, laboratory, or mission-critical facility experience.
- Backflow certification or experience with backflow prevention systems.
- Experience supporting laboratory or research facilities.
- Experience with chilled water, hydronic, or mechanical piping systems.
- OSHA safety training certifications.
- Journeyman plumber license or equivalent experience.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, and move equipment and materials.
- Ability to climb ladders, work in mechanical spaces, and access confined areas.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and perform physical work for extended periods.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying environmental conditions.
Work Environment
- Mission-critical federal laboratory and research facility environment.
- Combination of occupied spaces, mechanical rooms, utility areas, and support facilities.
- May require occasional after-hours, weekend, or emergency response work.
