Contract Terms: Yearly contract; employment for subsequent school years is dependent upon the designated student’s annual re-enrollment and continued assignment of individual nursing support.
Position Overview
Sand Springs Public Schools is seeking a compassionate, skilled Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) to provide direct, 1-on-1 healthcare services for an elementary student with complex medical needs during the school day. The primary goal of this position is to manage the student's clinical care, medical technology, and daily health needs, enabling them to learn safely in an inclusive educational environment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Note - duties vary based on individual student needs and individualized education plans.
Provide direct, continuous 1-on-1 nursing care to the assigned student throughout the school day, including transit on the school bus if designated in the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan.
Toileting & Personal Care Management: Assist the student with all daily toileting needs, which may include scheduled bathroom routines, diaper/incontinence care, personal hygiene maintenance, specialized transfer protocols, and clinical procedures such as intermittent catheterization or ostomy management as mandated by the care plan.
Implement the student’s Individualized Healthcare Plan (IHP) and Emergency Action Plan (EAP) in coordination with the District RN, parents, and primary care physicians.
Manage specialized medical equipment and complex interventions (e.g., tube feedings, airway care/tracheostomy management, seizure monitoring/protocols, medication administration).
Continuously monitor for changes in the student’s condition and respond swiftly to medical emergencies.
Accompany the student during classroom activities, therapies, lunch, recess, and field trips to ensure safety.
Maintain complete, accurate, and confidential health records in accordance with district policy, HIPAA, and FERPA guidelines.
Collaborate closely with the classroom teacher, the special education team, the school administrators, and the District Nurse.

Qualifications & Certification Requirements
Education & Licensure:
Active, unencumbered license as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) issued by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing. (Note: LPNs work under the supervision of a District RN).
Current CPR / Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification for Healthcare Providers.
(Optional for RNs) Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) School Nurse Certification is a plus for RN applicants holding a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
Background Check Requirements:
Must successfully clear a mandatory national criminal history record check, including fingerprinting through the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) via IdentoGO, prior to standard employment.
Preferred Experience:
Minimum 1–2 years of clinical nursing experience in pediatrics, home health, complex pediatric care, or school nursing.
Experience with specialized pediatric equipment and chronic health condition protocols (e.g., diabetes, severe asthma, seizure disorders, G-tubes).

Bending, stooping, kneeling, and moving quickly in response to medical urgent needs or emergencies.
Daily physical presence in classrooms, playgrounds, cafeterias, and standard school settings.
Employment Terms & Disclaimer
This position is hired on a year-to-year contract basis tied to the student's 180-day academic calendar. Continuance of employment for subsequent school years is strictly contingent upon the student remaining enrolled in Sand Springs Public Schools and maintaining documented eligibility/need for 1-on-1 specialized nursing care.
