TOOL & DIE ENGINEERING SUPERVISOR
JOB SUMMARY
The Tool & Die Engineering Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Tool & Die Department, supervising Tool & Die Shop employees, and ensuring the efficient execution of predictive, preventive and corrective maintenance activities. This role supports manufacturing operations through tooling design review, equipment upgrades, automation initiatives, troubleshooting process, and supplier coordination. The position serves as a key technical resource to ensure tooling performance, production readiness, safety, quality, and continuous improvement throughout the facility. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Supervision
- Directly supervises and provides leadership to Tool & Die Shop employees.
- Promotes a safe, productive, and team-oriented work environment that is results-driven and focused on continuous improvement.
- Provide coaching, training, and performance feedback to department personnel.
- Supports employee development and drives continuous improvement initiatives within the Tool & Die department, while collaborating closely with press operators, setup staff, and the coil line supervisor.
Planning & Scheduling
- Develop and manage daily schedules for preventive and corrective maintenance activities.
- Coordinate maintenance priorities with production and manufacturing teams to minimize downtime.
- Ensure timely completion and documentation of maintenance tasks.
- Reviews monthly tool and die statics and develop root cause analysis.
- Performs Corrective measures
- Interacts with all Press operators and coil line supervisor daily, maintains a log of finding by date, action to be taken and completion dates
- Set goals with supervisor for open die maintenance tasks and completion dates.
Tooling & Die Management
- Develop and maintain preventive maintenance programs for tooling and dies.
- Conduct regular inspections and coordinate repairs or replacements to maximize tooling performance and minimize downtime.
- Reviews and approves the design and development of metal stamping dies.
- Approves and releases new and modified stamping dies for production.
- Assist with die setup, press adjustments, die tryouts, and process optimization to ensure parts meet quality and production requirements. .
- Maintain accurate tooling, maintenance, and engineering records.
Equipment Upgrades & Automation Support
- Assist with machine upgrades, modifications, and capital improvement projects.
- Collaborate with engineering and manufacturing teams on automation initiatives.
- Evaluates opportunities to improve productivity, quality, and operational efficiency through automation and process improvements.
Technical Support & Troubleshooting
- Assist with troubleshooting equipment, tooling, and manufacturing process problems.
- Investigates root causes of failures and implements corrective actions.
- Supports production departments in resolving die maintenance issues and works directly with the coil line supervisor to address all tool and die concerns to achieve a 90% efficiency rate on coil lines.
- Assist in testing and implementing new processes, equipment, and technologies.
Supplier Coordination
- Obtain quotes for tooling, equipment, and related services when necessary.
- Evaluate supplier proposals and provide recommendations based on technical and cost considerations.
- Work with suppliers and die makers to ensure tooling meets design specifications and quality requirements.
- Monitor tooling schedules and supplier delivery dates to support project timelines.
- Coordinate corrective actions for supplier quality or delivery issues.
- Assist with procurement activities related to tooling and manufacturing equipment.
Reporting & Communication
- Prepares and distributes the weekly tool and die report every Fridays to the President, V.P. Project Management, Operation Manager, Production Manager and supervisors.
- Prepares and distributes the weekly new tool and die report every Friday to the President, Vice President of Project Management, Operations Manager, Production Manager, and supervisors.
- Communicate tooling schedules, project progress, and production readiness to stakeholders.
- Serve as a liaison between departments and the Mexico facility to ensure effective communication and timely tooling updates.
Powder Coating Technical Support
- Assist employees with troubleshooting powder coating defects, adhesion issues, and surface preparation challenges.
- Support training on powder coating best practices, equipment operation, and maintenance.
- Assist with product development and testing of new powder coating materials, equipment, and processes.
Cost Reduction & Continuous Improvement
- Identify and implement opportunities to reduce manufacturing, tooling, maintenance, and operational costs by a minimum of $80,000.00 per year.
- Support process improvement initiatives that enhance productivity, quality, and efficiency.
- Participate in cost-saving projects, supplier evaluations, and operational improvement activities.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all company safety policies and procedures.
- Promote safe work practices during tooling setup, maintenance, and production operations.
- Report and address safety concerns, hazards, and incidents promptly.
- Support a culture of safety throughout the department.
Team Collaboration
- Participate in weekly L-10 meetings and other management meetings as required.
- Fosters a positive, collaborative, and solutions-oriented work environment focused on continuous improvement.
- Provide technical and operational support to other departments as needed.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participate in required training programs.
- Maintain a neat and organized work area.
- Perform 7S Audits monthly and performs corrective measures based on the findings
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Tool & Die Technology, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in tool and die, metal stamping, manufacturing engineering, or a related industrial environment.
- Previous supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of metal stamping dies, tooling design, maintenance practices, and manufacturing processes.
- Knowledge of powder coating and paint processes and troubleshooting techniques.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, CAD models, and tooling specifications.
- Proficient in SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
- SolidWorks: 3D modeling and mechanical design.
- AutoCAD: 2D drafting and technical drawings.
- Strong technical problem-solving, organizational, communication, and project management skills.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position operates in both office and manufacturing environments and requires regular interaction with production personnel, maintenance teams, suppliers, and engineering staff. Frequent shop-floor presence is required. Occasional lifting, standing, walking, and other physical activities associated with manufacturing operations may be required.
