JOB SUMMARY
This position participates in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the wastewater treatment plant. An incumbent in this position may be designated “Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II” or “Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator III.”
MAJOR DUTIES
- Performs preventive and responsive maintenance on Wastewater Treatment Plant equipment.
- Operates wastewater treatment machinery and equipment; monitors SCADA system and makes operational adjustments as required; maintains and repairs electrical, mechanical, and other systems; assists in installing plant equipment.
- Collects and analyzes laboratory samples.
- Responds to customer service calls; provides information and resolves problems.
- Prepares a variety of regular and special reports; maintains related records.
- Maintains supply inventory and reorders as needed.
- Operates heavy equipment, including skid-steer, bush hog, etc.
- Conducts plant inspections; tours and inspects plant and equipment to ensure proper operation in compliance with state discharge regulations and monitoring equipment.
- Operates a variety of hand and power tools.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Senior Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include OSHA regulations, state and federal environmental regulations, and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of related technical duties. Inclement weather and field conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to operate, maintain, and repair the county’s wastewater treatment system. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of plant operations.

- Contacts are typically with coworkers, other county personnel, contractors, vendors, and members of the general public.
- Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The work is typically outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain NCDEQ Grade II Biological Wastewater Treatment certification and Level II Maintenance Technologist certifications.
- Wastewater or Water Treatment or Distribution certification preferred.
- Pretreatment, Lab, and Maintenance Technician Certification preferred.
