Job description:
PREVENTION 305 is seeking applicants for the position of Outreach Specialist & Testing Counselor. As an organization committed to creating safe spaces for our communities to access health services, the ideal candidate will be well-familiarized with behavioral health interventions and comfortable engaging in conversations about sexual health.
The Outreach Specialist & Testing Counselor will conduct targeted outreach (traditional, face-to-face interaction in the community and internet-based communication) to communities at risk of acquiring HIV & STIs. The Specialist will screen and link individuals to care (including PrEP/PEP/HIV Care), provide information and education on HIV and PrEP, conduct rapid testing for STIs and HIV, refer clients resulting reactive for STIs for treatment. They will also oversee community prevention activities, including the distribution of condom and safe sex supplies to clients and partner providers.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND PRIORITIES
● Conduct direct, targeted in-person outreach to priority populations to promote HIV Care, PrEP screening and PrEP enrollment. Examples of direct, targeted in-person outreach includes:
o Tabling at local events where the target audience frequents, lives, or works
o Hosting small scale events to attract and engage target populations
o Partnering with agencies to attend or table at their events (panel discussions, health fairs, concerts, festivals, school or sporting events, work events, etc.
o Strategically planning activities that involve “pounding the pavement” using a “boots to the street” or grassroots approach in public places (as permitted) to identify possible participants and;
o Other grassroots methods to reach the target population
● Establish partnerships with businesses that serve target populations
● Collaboratively develop social media content targeted toward priority communities in their respective areas of service (including documentation of present and future outreach locations/activities)
● Distribute condoms, educational materials, and other promotional items to the target population and venues where target populations congregate
● Adhere to strict procedures of confidentiality, HIPAA, patient data privacy requirements, release of information and data security
● Maintain accurate and complete participant and client records
● Communicate effectively with clients for appointments and follow-up on referrals
● Maintain accurate documentation of outreach activities and confidentially record relevant demographic information and current process, procedural, and program, and inventory logs of specific outreach and testing activities, health materials, etc.
ADDITIONAL POSITION DUTIES & EXPECTATIONS:
● Conduct peer and educational outreach on social apps
● Communicate regularly with outreach team members and management to improve outreach strategies through weekly input and analysis of outreach activities
● Provide culturally competent HIV counseling, testing, and referrals to target populations if necessary
● Engage in conversations about sexual health casually and comfortably
● Participate in and help lead online events and social media live streams
● Identify other online sites and real-world venues where target populations can be effectively and efficiently reached
● Assist clients in scheduling appointments with our healthcare providers
● Meet or exceed monthly goals of program deliverables
● Ability to work in or with various communities in a culturally responsive and experienced manner with people from different backgrounds, and diverse cultures
● Technology-savvy, especially on mobile platforms
● Experience with data collection and database systems
● Strong written and oral communications skills
● Proficiency in major computer applications such as Microsoft 365 (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.)
PREFERRED (but not required) SKILLS and EXPERIENCE:
● Spanish preferred
● One or more years’ experience working in or with communities of color and LGBTQ+ communities
● Experience in a sales or customer service role
● Experience working in a healthcare environment
● Basic understanding of HIPAA and patient data privacy requirements
Skills
- Strong background in public health or related fields.
- Strong public speaking abilities with experience in educating diverse audiences.
- Proficiency in motivational interviewing techniques to foster meaningful conversations.
- Experience in data collection methods for program evaluation purposes.
- Knowledge of social work principles is a plus.
- Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships within the community effectively.
