OVERVIEW OF PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITES:
The School-Based Mental Health Clinician provides comprehensive, school-based behavioral health services to children and adolescents within a school setting in southern Westchester County. The clinician works collaboratively with students, families, school personnel, community providers, and agency staff to identify and address mental health, emotional, behavioral, and social needs that may interfere with a student's well-being, relationships, and educational success.
The clinician provides a range of evidence-informed clinical services, including assessment, individual and family therapy, crisis intervention, care coordination, consultation, and referral to appropriate community resources. The position requires the ability to establish effective therapeutic relationships with students and families, engage individuals who may be reluctant to participate in treatment, and provide culturally responsive and developmentally appropriate interventions.
The School-Based Mental Health Clinician functions as an integrated member of both the host school community and the employing agency, maintaining appropriate clinical boundaries while developing strong collaborative relationships with school administrators, teachers, counselors, social workers, and other student-support personnel. The clinician responds appropriately to emerging behavioral health concerns and crises while adhering to agency policies, professional standards, applicable New York State regulations, and school-based protocols.
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:
Clinical Assessment and Treatment: Conduct behavioral health assessments and provide individual, family, and other clinically appropriate services to students experiencing mental health, emotional, behavioral, or psychosocial concerns.
School-Based Intervention: Deliver developmentally appropriate, evidence-informed interventions designed to improve students' emotional regulation, coping skills, interpersonal functioning, problem-solving abilities, school engagement, and overall behavioral health.
Family Engagement: Establish collaborative relationships with parents and caregivers, provide education and support regarding students' behavioral health needs, and actively engage families in treatment planning and ongoing services.
Crisis Intervention and Risk Management: Assess and respond to behavioral health crises, including concerns involving safety, significant emotional dysregulation, suicidal or other high-risk behaviors, and other urgent situations, in accordance with agency, school, and regulatory requirements.
Care Coordination and Collaboration: Coordinate services with school personnel, agency providers, medical and behavioral health professionals, and community-based resources to promote continuity of care and address barriers to treatment.
Consultation and Prevention: Provide consultation to school personnel regarding behavioral health concerns and contribute to prevention, early intervention, mental health education, and other activities that support a healthy school environment.
Documentation and Compliance: Maintain timely, accurate, and clinically appropriate documentation in accordance with agency standards, professional requirements, and applicable New York State regulations.
Community and School Partnership: Serve as a liaison between the mental health agency and the school community, helping to facilitate appropriate access to behavioral health services and strengthening collaboration between systems serving students and families.
Position Responsibilities:
Conducting comprehensive clinical assessments and developing individualized treatment goals and treatment plans based on each student's identified needs, strengths, circumstances, and level of functioning.
Providing individual, family, and other clinically appropriate behavioral health interventions to students in accordance with professional scope of practice and agency standards.
Providing services that are developmentally, culturally, and linguistically responsive to the students and families served.
Establishing and maintaining therapeutic relationships with students and families, including students and caregivers who may initially be hesitant or resistant to behavioral health services.

Recognizing and appropriately responding to mandated reporting obligations and other legal, ethical, and regulatory responsibilities.
Consulting with teachers, school counselors, administrators, social workers, nurses, and other school personnel regarding student behavioral health needs, while maintaining appropriate confidentiality and professional boundaries.
Participating in multidisciplinary meetings, student-support meetings, case conferences, and other school-based activities as clinically and operationally appropriate.
Coordinating referrals to agency programs, medical and behavioral health providers, community resources, and other services when needs extend beyond the scope of school-based treatment.
Maintaining communication and coordination with outside providers, with appropriate releases of information and in accordance with confidentiality requirements.
Monitoring student progress and modifying interventions and treatment goals as clinically indicated.
Supporting transitions between levels of care and assisting students and families with accessing ongoing behavioral health services when school-based services are no longer sufficient or appropriate.
Providing mental health consultation, education, and prevention-oriented activities for school personnel, students, families, and the broader school community as appropriate.
Participating in outreach and engagement activities designed to increase awareness and appropriate utilization of available behavioral health services.
Maintaining complete, accurate, timely, and clinically appropriate electronic health records and other required documentation.
Completing required assessments, progress notes, treatment-plan updates, discharge documentation, and other clinical records within established agency timeframes.
Meeting established productivity, quality, documentation, and compliance expectations for the position.
Participating in individual and group supervision, clinical consultation, staff meetings, trainings, and other professional development activities.
Maintaining current knowledge of evidence-informed behavioral health practices relevant to children and adolescents and incorporating appropriate interventions into clinical practice.
