Cook – Dining Hall Operations

Hampton Roads Academy, a premier independent PK–12 school located in Newport News, VA, is seeking a dedicated Cook to join our Dining Hall team. This position plays a vital role in preparing daily snacks and lunches for over 600 students and 100+ faculty and staff members.
Position Overview:
Reporting to the Executive Chef, the Cook will assist in all aspects of food preparation and service, ensuring high standards of quality, safety, and cleanliness are consistently maintained.
Key Responsibilities:
· Prepare and cook meals according to established recipes and dietary guidelines
· Ensure all ingredients and finished products are fresh, properly stored, and handled according to food safety standards (FIFO)
· Use various cooking techniques such as baking, grilling, steaming, boiling, and sautéing
· Measure, weigh, and mix ingredients accurately
· Wash, cut, slice, dice, and prep a variety of foods
· Assist in maintaining and restocking self-service food stations
· Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary work environment
· Safely handle kitchen utensils, equipment, and dishware
· Monitor food temperatures for both service and storage to ensure safety
· Uphold all food safety, hygiene, and sanitization standards
· Lift and carry items up to 50 lbs, and remain on feet for extended periods
· Perform additional duties as assigned by the Executive Chef
Qualifications:
· Prior cooking or food prep experience in a school, cafeteria, or similar setting preferred
· Knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices
· Strong teamwork and communication skills
· Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: From $18.75 per hour
