Travelling CX (Commissioning) Manager – Data Center Projects:
Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Traveling CX (Commissioning) Manager to lead commissioning activities on mission-critical data center projects for our client across the United States. This role is responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing all commissioning phases—from design review and equipment startup through integrated systems testing (IST), owner training, and final turnover.
The Traveling CX Manager serves as the central point of coordination between project management, MEP teams, commissioning agents, design consultants, equipment manufacturers, owners, and trade partners to ensure all building systems operate safely, reliably, and in accordance with project requirements. This position requires extensive travel and temporary relocation based on project assignments.
Key Responsibilities:
Commissioning Leadership:
- Develop and execute project-specific commissioning strategies and turnover plans.
- Lead commissioning activities from preconstruction through final owner acceptance.
- Coordinate commissioning milestones with project schedules to ensure timely completion.
- Manage the commissioning process for all critical building systems, ensuring readiness for testing and occupancy.
- Serve as the primary commissioning liaison among project teams, owners, commissioning agents, and trade partners.
System Readiness:
- Verify completion of construction activities before equipment startup and testing.
- Coordinate pre-functional inspections and ensure all systems are installed in accordance with project specifications.
- Confirm completion of startup procedures, manufacturer inspections, and equipment certifications.
- Track commissioning deficiencies and oversee timely corrective actions.
MEP & Mission-Critical Systems:
Coordinate commissioning activities for systems including:
- Medium- and low-voltage electrical distribution
- Switchgear and protective relays
- Transformers
- UPS systems
- Standby generators
- Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS)
- Bus duct and distribution equipment
- Building Automation Systems (BAS)
- Chilled water systems
- CRAH and CRAC units
- Air handling equipment
- Cooling towers
- Fire protection and life safety systems
- Security, monitoring, and controls systems
Integrated Systems Testing (IST):
- Develop and coordinate Integrated Systems Testing (IST) plans.
- Schedule and facilitate functional performance testing of interconnected building systems.
- Coordinate testing activities with commissioning agents, equipment vendors, owners, and trade contractors.
- Document test results, deficiencies, corrective actions, and retesting activities.
- Verify systems achieve required performance criteria before owner acceptance.
Documentation & Closeout:
- Maintain commissioning logs, issue tracking reports, and turnover documentation.
- Review operation and maintenance manuals for completeness and accuracy.
- Verify as-built drawings, warranties, startup documentation, and training materials are complete.
- Coordinate owner training sessions with vendors and subcontractors.
- Support project closeout and facility turnover.
Project Coordination:
- Participate in project planning meetings, MEP coordination meetings, and owner updates.
- Work closely with Project Managers, MEP Managers, and Superintendents to resolve commissioning challenges.
- Coordinate commissioning schedules with procurement, construction, and startup activities.
- Monitor progress and communicate commissioning status to project leadership.
Quality Assurance:
- Ensure all testing and commissioning activities comply with project specifications, contract documents, owner standards, and applicable codes.
- Promote quality throughout all phases of construction by identifying issues early and facilitating timely resolution.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by documenting lessons learned and commissioning best practices.
Safety Leadership:
- Promote safe work practices throughout commissioning and startup activities.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, project safety plans, lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures, energized work protocols, and company safety policies.
- Participate in safety meetings, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and incident investigations as required.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or a related field; equivalent experience will also be considered.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in commissioning, MEP construction, mission-critical operations, or related disciplines.
- Minimum 3 years of commissioning leadership experience on large commercial, industrial, healthcare, manufacturing, or mission-critical projects.
- Experience with data center commissioning or other mission-critical facilities is strongly preferred.
- Thorough understanding of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, controls, and life safety systems.
- Experience coordinating integrated systems testing (IST), startup, and owner turnover.
- Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, commissioning plans, and control sequences.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam, Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, and commissioning management platforms.
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel extensively and relocate temporarily based on project assignments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience supporting hyperscale or enterprise data center construction.
- Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP), Certified Commissioning Authority (CxA), Building Commissioning Professional (BCxP), or similar credential.
- OSHA 30 certification.
- LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) or related sustainability credential.
- Experience with BIM coordination and Virtual Design & Construction (VDC).
- Familiarity with owner commissioning standards from major cloud providers and mission-critical operators.

- Ability to travel extensively and work on temporary assignments throughout the United States.

- Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and access elevated work areas.
- Occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to work in office and construction site environments while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
