Recreational Sports is part of the Office of Student Life, which is dedicated to supporting students¿ health, safety, and success throughout their IU experience. The Recreational Sports mission is to connect, inform, and inspire individuals to lead active, healthy lifestyles. Serving over 36,000 students, faculty, staff, and community members annually, we offer a wide variety of programs across 2 multipurpose facilities, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, adventure spaces, and more. Our team includes 46 professional staff and over 800 student employees.

Job Summary
Part-Time Personal Trainers create a positive and motivating environment for students, staff, and community members across our facilities, including the SRSC, Bill Garrett Fieldhouse, and the IU Tennis Center. They also play a key role in supporting healthy lifestyles and building community through movement. This role offers a great opportunity to stay active, develop leadership and communication skills, and become part of a supportive campus community. You'll also gain valuable experience in customer service, group facilitation, logistical thinking, problem solving, and time management skills that are transferable to any future career.
Department-Specific Responsibilities

Delivers High-Quality Instruction by providing safe, effective, and engaging sessions tailored to participant needs, whether in group formats, 1-on-1 training, or sport-specific lessons.

Arrives early to sessions, set up appropriately, and begin and end on time to ensure a professional and organized experience.

Tracks attendance, session details, and participant progress using approved systems and reporting tools.

Responds promptly to emails and client assignments, submit required reports, and maintain open communication with supervisors and team members.

Participates in Staff Development by attending required meetings, trainings, workshops, and performance reviews to stay informed and aligned with departmental standards.

Follows all Campus Recreational Sports guidelines, including safety protocols, risk management procedures, and role-specific manuals or playbooks.

Exhibits consistent punctuality, accountability, and respectful conduct in all interactions and responsibilities.

Fosters a welcoming atmosphere that encourages participant engagement, skill development, and enjoyment across all instructional settings.

Designs workouts that are effective, engaging, and educational tailored to each client's needs.

Gains hands-on experience in fitness coaching, and are part of a supportive, health-focused community.

Conducts 1-on-1 training sessions focused on individualized fitness goals and wellness coaching.

Performs fitness assessments and track client progress over time.

Develops customized workout plans based on client needs and objectives.

Communicates directly with the Assistant Director and Coordinator or Personal Training regarding client updates and concerns.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required

General knowledge at the high school level

WORK EXPERIENCE

Prior experience as a personal trainer serving clients
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required:

American Council of Exercise's Certified Personal Training (ACE-PT), OR
-
American College of Sports Medicine's Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-EP) OR
-
Certified Personal Trainer (ACSM-CPT), the National Strength and Conditioning Association's Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) or Certified Personal Trainer (NSCA-CPT), OR
-
Nationally accredited certification approved by the Assistant Director of Personal Training

Group Exercise Leaders must successfully demonstrate skills through an audition.
Working Conditions / Demands
These positions require frequently moving about the workspace. Positions require working both indoors and outdoors and ability to move up to 50 pounds with assistance. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary
$21.85 per hour
Work Hours
Part-time work between 6 to 29 hours per week, depending on availability
No position should exceed 29 hours per week across all campus positions.
Flexible scheduling is available.
Early morning, evening and weekend shifts may be required.
