Responsibilities
- Safely operate school buses and commercial vehicles, including paratransit and child transportation vehicles, adhering to all traffic laws and safety regulations
- Conduct pre-trip inspections to ensure vehicle safety, mechanical functionality, and cleanliness before each route
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, school personnel, and dispatchers using clear English or bilingual communication skills
- Manage student behavior on the bus through positive behavior management techniques and enforce safety rules consistently
- Assist students with special needs or childcare requirements, providing compassionate support as needed
- Maintain accurate logs of routes, incidents, and vehicle maintenance reports
- Respond promptly to emergencies or incidents on the road by coordinating with emergency responders and following established protocols
Qualifications
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; commercial driver’s license (CDL) preferred but not mandatory depending on jurisdiction
- Experience in bus driving or commercial driving environments; familiarity with school bus driving is highly desirable
- Strong communication skills in English; bilingual abilities are a plus for serving diverse communities
- Mechanical knowledge to perform basic vehicle inspections and troubleshoot minor issues
- Experience working with children or in childcare settings; patience and excellent behavior management skills are essential
- Knowledge of safety procedures related to school transportation and child protection policies
- Ability to handle stressful situations calmly while maintaining professionalism and focus
