Position Summary
The Thrift Store Assistant Manager plays a crucial role in maintaining smooth, daily retail and donation operations, covering managerial absences, and addressing varying store needs. This position directly supports our mission by assisting with the oversight of staff and volunteers, managing customer relations, processing donations, and ensuring our stores maintain a clean, positive, and welcoming environment for all neighbors and stakeholders.
What You Will Be Doing (Essential Responsibilities)
- Manage store operations, staff, and customer resolutions when the Store Manager is not present, acting as a positive role model for the team.
- Perform daily register cash counts and balance sheets with strict accuracy and precision, completing all necessary financial recordkeeping.
- Safely receive, sort, price, and process incoming donations according to NNH policies and quality guidelines.
- Assist the Store Manager with onboarding, training, coaching, and motivating staff and volunteers to perform their best.
- Provide and model excellent customer service, communicate effectively to meet customer needs, and assist donors with transporting items from their vehicles.
- Maintain a clean, organized retail floor and backroom; submit online work orders for facilities maintenance and signage needs in a timely manner.
- Oversee opening and closing procedures of the retail locations, ensuring security and policy compliance.
What You Bring to the Table (Qualifications)
- High school diploma or GED required.
- You have at least 2 years of experience in a retail environment or customer service.
- You have at least 1 year of experience in a supervisory, team lead, or keyholder role, with a proven ability to delegate and manage a team.
- You possess strong financial accuracy and feel confident handling daily register reconciliations.
- You have deep empathy for individuals from all socio-economic backgrounds and a desire to serve the underprivileged.
Bonus points if you have worked in a thrift store or non-profit environment, or have experience using Clover POS and Google Suite.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Requires near-constant movement, standing, and walking for up to 8 hours a day.
- Ability to frequently bend, stoop, reach, and safely lift/push/pull donation boxes and bags weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Indoor retail and processing sections; subject to temperature fluctuations in receiving areas (loading docks/backrooms).
- Reliable personal transportation is required to attend offsite meetings.
- Ability to safely handle suboptimal or dirty donation materials (e.g., sorting through dusty or unwashed items).
