Off the Beaten Path is Steamboat’s only independent bookstore, carrying a variety of new and used books as well as locally roasted coffee and house-made pastries. This position is a combination of bookseller and barista. Prior retail and/or barista experience is preferred but not required. Enthusiasm for books, coffee, and all things nerdy is a must. This is a customer service based position, so good people-skills are a job requirement!
No minimum education requirement, but you must be able to read and write English proficiently. We are a very popular and fast-paced store much of the year, so we are seeking candidates who work well under pressure.
This position requires minimum availability of 32 hours/week, weekend & holiday shifts required. Shifts are typically 8 hours long and are scheduled between the hours of 7am - 7pm.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Setting up the café for the day (turning on equipment, brewing coffee, stocking, etc.)
- Ringing up customers (books and coffee)
- Learning drink and food codes and preparing drinks according to our recipes
- Recommending drinks, food, and bagged coffee to customers
- Breaking down the café at the end of the day (putting away food, shutting down equipment, cleaning, etc.)
- Answering phone calls
- Recommending books to customers and assisting customers with checking our inventory
- Placing special orders for books that we do not have in stock
- Writing minimum of 1 book review per month (50 words or less)
- Setting book displays, shelving, and keeping the store clean and tidy
- Must be able to climb stairs, carry up to 50 lbs., and stand for extended periods of time
Pay starts at $19/hour + café tips (daily tips average around $60 per barista). Employees are eligible for a raise after 90 days and a good review.
After 6 months of employment, employees may be eligible for sales bonuses based on store sales goals and number of bookselling hours per month.
After 1 year of employment, employees are eligible for paid time off, a pay raise, and their choice of a ski pass bonus OR $75/paycheck towards healthcare costs.
