New Steps to New Beginnings, LLC is seeking an experienced and motivated Behavioral Health Medical Director to provide clinical leadership and oversight for a growing behavioral health agency expanding community-based mental health and substance use services throughout North Carolina. The Behavioral Health Medical Director will support organizational compliance with NC Medicaid, Tailored Plan requirements, CABHA-aligned standards, state and federal regulations, and accreditation expectations related to behavioral health service delivery.
Our agency currently provides outpatient and community-based behavioral health services and is continuing to expand programming throughout North Carolina. We are seeking a qualified provider with experience in behavioral health and substance use treatment to support clinical oversight, program development, quality improvement, and regulatory compliance in alignment with NC Medicaid and accreditation standards.
Position Responsibilities:
- Provide clinical and medical oversight for behavioral health and substance use services in accordance with NC Medicaid clinical coverage policies, state regulations, and accreditation standards.
- Support implementation and monitoring of evidence-based, trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and recovery-oriented treatment practices.
- Provide consultation and clinical guidance to licensed clinicians, associate licensed staff, qualified professionals, peer support staff, and ancillary personnel regarding complex behavioral health presentations.
- Participate in quality management, utilization review, risk management, and performance improvement activities.
- Support compliance with North Carolina Medicaid Clinical Coverage Policies, ASAM guidelines, state regulations, and professional practice standards
- Assist with development, implementation, and review of clinical workflows, policies, procedures, and service delivery standards.
- Support crisis response planning and risk mitigation efforts, including suicide risk assessment protocols, safety planning, abuse/neglect reporting procedures, and psychiatric emergency coordination.
- Collaborate with leadership regarding accreditation readiness activities, including CARF, state audits, Medicaid reviews, and payer monitoring processes.
Qualifications:
- Active and unrestricted North Carolina physician license (MD or DO).
- DEA registration and unrestricted prescribing authority.
- Strong behavioral health and/or substance use treatment experience required.
- Knowledge of community-based behavioral health services, ASAM levels of care, and Medicaid-funded service delivery.
- Experience providing clinical oversight, supervision, or consultation within behavioral health settings preferred.
- Understanding of quality assurance, compliance, and documentation standards.
- Strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills.
Preferred Experience:
- SAIOP, SACOT, CST, OPT, or community mental health services.
- Co-occurring mental health and substance use treatment.
- Medicaid managed care and authorization processes.
- Program development and staff training.
- Crisis intervention and recovery-oriented care models.
