Job Description:
The Honing & Lapping Machinist is responsible for precision-focused machining to support finishing operations within the Lapping Cell located inside our Assembly facility. This position performs honing, lapping, and other precision finishing processes required to bring components to their final dimensional requirements prior to assembly.
This role is critical to the success of our matched fit assemblies, where components must be individually sized and finished to function together as a set. The work requires patience, attention to detail, and the ability to consistently maintain extremely tight tolerances.
Key Attributes for Success
- Perform honing and lapping operations on precision components to meet dimensional and surface finish requirements
- Hold tolerances as tight as ±0.0002 inches as required by engineering drawings
- Support matched fit assemblies by carefully finishing parts that must function together as a mated set
- Measure and verify dimensions using precision inspection tools including micrometers, bore gauges, and other measuring equipment
- Work closely with assembly personnel to ensure components meet fit and function requirements prior to final build
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace within the Lapping Cell to support high-precision work
- Identify potential dimensional or fit concerns early and communicate them to supervision or quality personnel
- Follow company quality standards and procedures consistent with aerospace manufacturing
Job Requirements and Qualifications:
Skills
- Ability to perform precision honing, lapping, or similar finishing processes
- Strong GD&T knowledge required
- Ability to consistently hold tolerances of 0.0002”
- Strong understanding of precision measurement and inspection tools
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and dimensional requirements
- High attention to detail and patience when working with precision components
- Sunnen honing equipment experience preferred
Knowledge and Experience
- Experience working with matched fit assemblies or hand-fit precision components
- 2+ years working in aerospace or other high-precision manufacturing environments
- Able to verify GD&T using inspection equipment including micrometers, dial indicators, and profilometers
