Established in 1989, Windsor is a private residential community and sporting club spanning 472 acres of lush barrier island between the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean in Vero Beach, Florida.
In the early 1990s, W. Galen Weston and the Hon. Hilary M. Weston of Toronto, Canada visited South Florida in search of a winter home for themselves and their children. Windsor was designed by renowned town planners Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk in the New Urbanism style of residential living. It offers public and community spaces framed by timeless architecture and landscape design that celebrates its tropical and unspoiled setting.
Windsor is comprised of 350 homesites in various styles, including village homes, cottages and country estates, all remarkable for their signature Anglo-Caribbean architecture and gracious living. Position Description
Windsor is seeking a hands on Director of Grounds and Sustainable Land Care to establish and oversee the maintenance of a new 47-acre native plant landscape (The North Village) in Vero Beach, Florida as well as coordinate the third party landscape and grounds maintenance provided throughout the Club and Community common areas. This individual will work closely with the VP of Construction, Community Association Manager, and the Club and Community’s landscape architect on various improvement projects.
The new North Village landscape includes an estuary and a freshwater lake with boardwalks as amenities and storm water features. The ideal candidate will be able to balance coastal Florida environmental and ecological priorities with the impeccable presentation standards associated with Windsor. The Director will supervise the remaining installation of the North Village landscape according to plans and standards prepared by Windsor’s landscape architect. The position will require reporting to ensure compliance with the Landscape Code and the Land Care Management Plan and to ensure the continued success of the North Village landscape in the long term.
The Director should lead with a philosophy of continuous improvement and should reflect that through the ongoing support and training of Windsor staff and subcontracted maintenance professionals. This individual will need to work closely with and relate to residents on their level. Native plant care education will be required to ensure successful transitions from conventional landscaping to more nature-based practices. The Director will function as a facilitator, engaging decision-makers, managers, landscapers, and homeowners, and implementing management plans and hands-on training programs.
Position Summary
The position requires a creative and organized self-starter with significant experience in native Florida horticulture, plant health care, landscape management, environmental science, conservation biology, and restoration ecology. This individual must be passionate and knowledgeable about topics such as plant/wildlife interactions, soil biology, and water usage; have a commitment to nature-based practices; have land-based project management experience; and possess exceptional and enthusiastic communication skills. This individual should have strong teamwork skills and the ability to work collaboratively with others. The Director of Grounds and Sustainable Land Care is a full-time position that reports to the General Manager of Windsor.
Responsibilities

Project Management:
-
Supervise the preparation, installation, and management of native landscape, prioritizing invasive species management, resource management (including soil quality, water usage and quality, and existing tree root zone protection); and the establishment of landscape which includes annuals, perennials, native grasses, and turfgrass.

Ensure compliance with Windsor’s North Village Landscape Code and Land Care Management Plan.

On-site supervision of landscape contractors and daily inspection of landscape to assess maintenance needs.

Be the primary facilitator between Windsor and subcontracted landscapers to support site-specific, environmentally sound land management plans for Windsor.

Provide workshops and training for Windsor stakeholders, including managers, contracted vendors, and homeowners/members.

Conduct weekly evaluations and write reports on grounds management.

Education and Technical Assistance:

Provide in-person technical assistance to decision-makers, designers, landscapers, and homeowners.

Support development of a comprehensive training program for landscapers transitioning chemically managed landscapes to toxic-free, nature-based practices.

Design educational materials and programs, including workshops for homeowners and landscapers.

Help identify potential speakers for an ongoing Member series on topics such as sustainability and various horticulture practices.

Play a key role in developing the Christmas decorating plan for the Club and Community to ensure a cohesive look and feel.

Oversee the Club’s Butterfly garden.

Study and make recommendations for potential new offerings such as the addition of bee hives, a Chef’s garden, etc..
Desired Qualifications

Preferred 7-10 years or more experience in native Florida horticultural landscape management, environmental science, conservation biology, and restoration ecology.

Strong knowledge of plant health, plant/wildlife interactions, soil biology, clean water practices.

Excellent contacts in horticulture, environmental, and educational fields.

Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace.

Project management, and reporting experience.

Compelling and convincing problem-solver and consensus-builder.

Strong written and oral communication skills and attention to detail.

Ability to work well with a wide range of people with energy, enthusiasm, and be able to adapt to changing situations.

A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation is required.

Spanish language skills strongly recommended.
Compensation
This is a full-time position with benefits. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
