POSITION SUMMARY
The Fox Valley Family YMCA is seeking a dependable, caring, and safety-minded individual to join our Aquatics team as a Daytime Lifeguard & Swim Instructor.
This role helps create a safe, welcoming, and positive environment where members of all ages can build confidence in and around the water. Whether guarding the pool, teaching swim lessons, or greeting members with a smile, you'll play an important role in helping people feel supported, encouraged, and connected.
This position requires early morning and daytime availability, including opening the pool and providing exceptional member service throughout the day.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Maintain constant surveillance of the pool and surrounding areas to ensure the safety of all participants.
- Prevent accidents by enforcing YMCA policies, pool rules, and safety procedures in a positive and respectful manner.
- Respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies using YMCA and American Red Cross standards.
- Teach swim lessons using YMCA curriculum while creating a fun, encouraging, and supportive learning environment.
- Build positive relationships with members, participants, and families, helping each person feel welcome and valued.
- Complete daily safety inspections and maintain a clean, organized, and safe aquatic environment.
- Accurately complete required reports, incident documentation, and attendance records.
- Assist with opening procedures and preparing the pool for daily operations.
- Support aquatics programs, special events, and branch activities as needed.
- Demonstrate the YMCA's Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility in every interaction.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Current YMCA or Jeff Ellis and Associates certification (or ability to obtain before employment).
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications (or ability to obtain before employment).
- YMCA Swim Instructor certification preferred, or willingness to complete YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor training.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to remain calm, attentive, and make sound decisions in emergency situations.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently during daytime hours.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Maintain active surveillance of the pool area for extended periods.
- Swim, rescue, and remove participants from the water when necessary.
- Stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Work in a warm, humid pool environment and outdoors when required.
- Hear noises and distress signals and communicate clearly in emergency situations.
