GENERAL FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Program Director/Senior Program Director, the Climbing Wall Attendant will prevent accidents before they occur and promote the general safety and protection of climbers at all times.
MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Education/Experience Requirements:
- Minimum age of 18
- Relevant climbing wall experience
Physical/Mental Requirements:

Must be able to frequently perform the following physical activities at a certification-level required for climbing wall attendants; climb, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, reach with hands, sit, stand for extended periods of time, walk, lift and carry up to 75 pounds, communicate verbally and have adequate hearing

Must be able to visually see all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility

Must possess ability to remain alert and maintain concentration for long periods of time to ensure safety of climbers

Must possess ability to make independent and sound decisions in a rapidly changing environment

Must be able to show initiative in the absence of supervision

Must be able to relate to and work with diverse groups of people in a friendly and consistent manner

Complete and pass an in-branch training by Climbing Wall Instructor, First Aid and Initial and Annual Skills Verification in accordance with Conditions of Employment

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Belaying climbers in a controlled and safe manner.
-
Monitoring activities and participants in the climbing area and enforcing all climbing policies and administrative duties.

Verifying all climbers and/or guardians have completed the appropriate Climbing Wall Release Form.

Verifying those who belay at Climbing Wall are YMCA belay certified and wearing their YMCA belay card; challenging any belayer who is not wearing a card or is belaying in an unsafe manner.

Verifying all climbers using the Auto Belays are under the supervision of a YMCA Climbing Wall Attendant or current belay-card approved person.

Following and enforcing all Belay Guidelines, YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures.
- Responsible for positively correcting any unsafe wall activity immediately every time it occurs.
- Being knowledgeable and prepared to implement emergency procedures immediately.
- Reporting all incidents/accidents on the appropriate form as required and provide to supervisor within 24 hours of event.

Following all climbing wall opening and closing procedures; daisy-chaining the ropes, anchoring to floor anchors, securing/locking auto belays and putting all equipment away at the end of shift.

Following equipment inspection guidelines and follow procedures for the repair/removal of damaged/worn equipment.
- Reporting any facility or equipment irregularities, unsafe conditions or feedback to supervisor in writing.

Responsible for cleanliness and neatness of the climbing wall area.
- Maintaining records as required (i.e. climber and rope usage logs, weekly maintenance).

Maintaining effective, positive relationships with the members, participants, volunteers and staff.

Maintain prompt hours and follow established procedures for absences.
- Attending all required training sessions and scheduled meetings.

Supporting Strong Community Campaign fundraising.

All other duties as assigned.
