This is general law enforcement work responsible for protecting life and property within Douglas County; enforcing traffic regulations state laws and county ordinances; responding to emergency situations citizen requests for assistance and alarms; and conducting investigations in response to reported or discovered criminal activity. Work may involve duty as a detective or investigator process serving administrative duties or other special assignments as determined by the Sheriff. A superior officer reviews work assignments and gives specific instructions and assistance when guidance or back-up is needed. Work requires independent judgment and discretion in difficult or unusual situations. Work involves personal danger. Potential duty assignments include the following divisions: Investigations Narcotics Patrol and Warrants.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties include but are not limited to:
Patrolling the county to provide a visible deterrent in uniform and in marked cars; enforcing laws and ordinances to protect life and property; monitoring commercial and residential areas for signs of criminal activity Responding to calls for assistance disturbance calls and complaints of crimes; enforcing federal state and local laws by performing warrant felony or misdemeanor arrests; protecting the civil rights of persons in custody; using non-deadly and deadly force to protect oneself other officers and citizens
Securing and protecting crime scenes by establishing boundaries detaining victims suspects and witnesses; locating and identifying evidence and briefing supervisors and investigators on their arrival
Conducting investigations and interviews to establish probable cause and reasonable suspicion; collecting information and determining follow-up actions; presenting evidence and testimony in courts of law; assisting in prosecuting felony and misdemeanor cases
Serving as a first responder to provide aid and assistance to victims of traffic and other accidents; assisting fire and emergency medical services in treating and transporting victims
Searching for apprehending and arresting suspects; accurately completing incident reports arrest details and booking forms
Conducting searches and seizures in a wide variety of contexts including frisks incident to an arrest pursuant to warrant plain view seizures emergency conditions and inventories
Performing business and residential security checks; checking and ensuring building/home is secured and reporting unsecured buildings
Enforcing traffic and parking laws through the issuance of citations and warnings; routinely inspecting roadways bridges and traffic signals and signs to find and report any hazardous conditions
Assisting with stranded motorists crowd control traffic direction and hazardous material emergency assistance; escorting special processions; responding to natural or manmade disasters; and transporting prisoners to jail facility
Preparing and maintaining a wide variety of departmental records and reports in compliance with departmental and legal policies and procedures; preparing and filing thorough written incident reports
Operating and maintaining any assigned uniform vehicle and equipment in accordance with departmental policies and procedures
Giving advice on laws ordinances and general information to the public; rendering advice on domestic disturbances; assisting citizens in need

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Two year community college degree or vocational school training in police science law enforcement criminal justice administration public administration or a related field
Two years law enforcement or corrections experience
Successful completion of a technical or college program in Basic Emergency Medical Technology if required by assignment
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Must meet all eligibility requirements established by the Sheriff’s Department for promotion to this classification.
Must be 18 years of age or older
Must be a citizen of the United States or legally qualified to work in the United States
Must have the ability to pass a physical examination
Must have no record of any felony conviction
CERTIFICATES LICENSES REGISTRATIONS:
Possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License (Class C) and a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR)
Basic certification as a Georgia Peace Officer; maintain certification
Successful completion of a minimum of 40 hours POST-approved in-service training each year
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of modern law enforcement and corrections principles practices operations procedures techniques and equipment; federal state and local criminal traffic and juvenile laws; legal procedures rules regulations policies and procedures related to county government and correctional institutions and to apply such knowledge to specific situations; the nature and risks of law enforcement; and the rules regulations policies and procedures of the Sheriff’s Office
Knowledge of modern office practices methods and equipment

Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary for the safe operation of equipment tools machinery and vehicles as required by assignment
