Technician – Fiber Locator

Position Summary
The Fiber Locator is responsible for accurately locating and marking Bluegrass Network underground facilities to help protect the integrity of the network and ensure safe excavation and construction activities. This position responds to Kentucky 811 locate requests, conducts field surveys, maintains accurate utility records, and works closely with contractors, project managers, engineering partners, and internal network teams.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Receive, review, sort, and prioritize Kentucky 811 utility marking requests, including emergency locate requests.
- Use specialized locating equipment, maps, GPS technology, and other resources to accurately locate and mark underground Bluegrass Network facilities.
- Interpret blueprints, maps, network records, and other documentation to determine the location of underground utilities and conduct field surveys as needed.
- Communicate effectively with contractors, project managers, utility companies, and internal teams regarding utility locations and potential conflicts.
- Document utility locations, field findings, network changes, and other relevant information while maintaining accurate records and providing updates to the OSP engineering firm and internal network planning teams.
- Coordinate with other utility providers and internal departments to help prevent damage, service interruptions, and conflicts involving underground facilities.
Additional Responsibilities
- Maintain and properly care for assigned company vehicle and locating equipment.
- Follow all company safety policies, Kentucky 811 requirements, and safe excavation practices.
- Work closely with Network Planning, Network Operations, Data Systems, and other Telecom teams.
- Participate in after-hours, emergency, and overtime work as needed.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by management.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver's license with a safe driving record.
- Must maintain a clean driving record and meet the company's requirements for operating a company vehicle.
- Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and comply with the company's drug and alcohol testing policy.
- Experience in utility locating, telecommunications, construction, or a related field preferred.
- Basic understanding of underground utility systems and telecommunications infrastructure.
- Ability to operate technical utility locating equipment.
- Knowledge of construction practices and safe excavation procedures.
- Familiarity with mapping software, GPS technology, or related systems preferred.
- Utility locating certification or related certification is preferred.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and attention-to-detail skills.
- Ability to read and interpret maps, blueprints, and utility records.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.
- Ability and willingness to follow all safety requirements associated with the position.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
This position requires regular outdoor field work and may involve walking, standing, bending, kneeling, digging, and working around construction areas and roadways. The employee must be able to safely operate locating equipment and work in varying weather conditions.
Because the position responds to Kentucky 811 and emergency locate requests, occasional after-hours, weekend, holiday, and overtime work may be required.

Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
