Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and dependable 2nd Shift Lead – Master Diesel Mechanic to join our shop team and oversee the maintenance and repair of our fleet of diesel trucks, trailers, light- and medium-duty vehicles, and equipment.
The ideal candidate will have 8+ years of diesel mechanic experience, strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills, and the ability to work independently while leading other technicians. This position is responsible for helping ensure our fleet remains safe, reliable, and operating efficiently while maintaining a clean, organized, and professional shop environment.
The 2nd Shift Lead will be responsible for communicating repair needs, parts requirements, and maintenance updates with management, as well as ensuring technicians are completing repairs properly and in accordance with company and DOT standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee shop operations during the 2nd shift.
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel engines and heavy-duty equipment.
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair air brake, hydraulic, suspension, and electrical systems.
- Diagnose and repair diesel after-treatment and emissions systems.
- Perform clutch adjustments and repairs.
- Perform preventative maintenance on trucks, trailers, and equipment.
- Diagnose and repair gasoline-powered service vehicles and equipment.
- Diagnose and repair small engines and seasonal equipment as needed.
- Use diagnostic software and computer-based systems to troubleshoot equipment.
- Perform welding, fabrication, and general metal repair.
- Safely operate hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and shop equipment.
- Maintain accurate service and repair records.
- Communicate repair status, parts needs, and maintenance concerns to management in a timely manner.
- Help prioritize repairs and identify maintenance concerns to minimize vehicle downtime.
- Lead other technicians and ensure their work is completed properly and meets company and DOT standards.
- Inspect completed repairs to ensure quality and proper workmanship.
- Ensure required preventative maintenance and inspections are completed.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop.
- Work independently while providing direction and support to other technicians.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of professional diesel mechanic experience required.
- State mechanical certifications required.
- Valid driver's license required.
- CDL-A is a plus.
- Strong knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines.
- Strong knowledge of diesel after-treatment and emissions systems.
- Strong understanding of air brake, hydraulic, suspension, brake, and electrical systems.
- Experience with diagnostic software and computerized diagnostic equipment.
- Welding and fabrication experience required.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to lead other technicians and hold them accountable for quality workmanship.
- Ability to ensure repairs and maintenance are completed according to company and DOT standards.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Must have your own professional mechanic tools.
- Strong communication skills with management and technicians.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment to quality workmanship.
