Overview
Join our healthcare team as a Pre-Operative Nurse, where your expertise will play a vital role in preparing patients for surgery and ensuring optimal outcomes. This energetic position offers the opportunity to work closely with surgical teams, assess patient needs, and deliver compassionate care. As a key member of our perioperative services, you will facilitate smooth patient transitions from pre-op to surgery, utilizing your extensive nursing skills and clinical knowledge to make a positive impact on patient experiences.
Duties
- Conduct comprehensive pre-operative assessments, including vital signs, medical history review, and physical examinations to evaluate patient readiness for surgery.
- Educate patients and their families about surgical procedures, anesthesia risks, and post-operative care instructions to ensure informed consent and reduce anxiety.
- Prepare patients for surgery by establishing IV infusions, applying aseptic techniques, and other duties as needed.
- Collaborate with surgical teams, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care plans and optimize patient care efficiency.
- Monitor patients’ physiological status using physiology knowledge during pre-op procedures and document all assessments accurately in electronic health record (EHR) systems such as Cerner.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations and infection control protocols while maintaining compassionate and ethical care to the patient and caregivers.
- Assist with discharge planning by providing post-operative instructions and coordinating follow-up care or home & community care services working with a multi-disciplinary information sharing team.
Requirements
- Valid nursing license; experience in perioperative or surgical nursing preferred.
- Demonstrated proficiency in medical terminology, anatomy knowledge, and diagnostic evaluation techniques.
- Hands-on experience with IV insertion, catheter care, suturing, and aseptic technique essential for patient preparation tasks.
- Familiarity with EMR/EHR systems such as Epic or Cerner for accurate medical documentation.
- Ability to work efficiently in fast-paced environments including hospital medicine, outpatient clinics, or ambulatory surgery centers.
- Strong communication skills to educate patients clearly and collaborate seamlessly with multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience working with individuals with all ages, orthopedic or spine experience is preferred.
