Central Kitchen Maintenance Technician
Summary
Performs specialized technical maintenance and repair work on food production equipment, boilers, and utility systems located within the Central Kitchen. Ensures safe and efficient operation of all mechanical and steam systems that support food production and packaging. Maintains preventive maintenance programs, performs boiler water testing, and ensures compliance with state and local safety regulations.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is a site-based technical position assigned exclusively to the Central Kitchen. It is responsible for the reliable operation and maintenance of all production and utility systems within the facility, including boilers, chillers, refrigeration, and food processing equipment. The role focuses on maintaining production uptime and equipment safety in a large-scale food service environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operates, maintains, and performs preventive maintenance on steam boilers, compressors, chillers, and production machinery. Tests and logs boiler water for PH, pressure, and safety compliance. Repairs and adjusts kitchen machinery including ovens, kettles, conveyors, dishwashers, and refrigeration units. Replaces belts, bearings, filters, gaskets, and performs lubrication and calibration tasks. Maintains mechanical and utility rooms to safety and sanitation standards. Performs emergency repairs to ensure continuous production. Maintains maintenance and service logs, parts inventory, and work orders. Cleans and inspects boiler and refrigeration systems for safe operation. Collaborates with Maintenance Lead and contracted vendors on specialized system repairs when needed. Performs related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Demonstrated knowledge of:
Steam boiler operation and safety, industrial kitchen equipment maintenance, basic plumbing/electrical repair, refrigeration systems, and safe work practices.
Ability to:
Operate and troubleshoot mechanical systems, perform water testing, interpret technical manuals, and maintain accurate maintenance records.
Education and Experience
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Experience:
- Two years of experience in mechanical or commercial kitchen maintenance preferred.
- Boiler experience preferred.
- Additional education may substitute for some experience.
License and Certificates
- Maintain valid California Health (ServSafe) certificate (every five years)
- Completion of boiler operation and maintenance training within 90 days of hire. (provided as part of the Agency’s training).
Working Environment
Work performed in mechanical rooms and food production areas with exposure to steam, heat, humidity, cold, and moving machinery. Requires frequent lifting (up to 75 lbs), bending, reaching, and standing. Exposure to cleaning chemicals, pressurized systems, and industrial noise levels.
