Lightbridge Academy of Centerville is seeking a dependable, safety-focused, and nurturing Bus Driver / Classroom Float to join our team. This position is responsible for safely transporting children to and from Lightbridge Academy while also providing classroom support throughout the day.
The ideal candidate is reliable, professional, patient, and enjoys working with young children. This position requires someone who can confidently operate a center vehicle, maintain a safe and clean transportation environment, and transition seamlessly into classrooms to support teachers and children as needed.
Primary ResponsibilitiesTransportation Responsibilities
- Safely transport children to and from Lightbridge Academy and approved schools or locations.
- Follow all Lightbridge Academy transportation policies and procedures.
- Follow all applicable Ohio Department of Children and Youth/childcare licensing transportation requirements.
- Maintain a safe, calm, and positive environment while children are in the vehicle.
- Complete required transportation documentation, attendance records, and vehicle checklists.
- Conduct required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
- Ensure all children are properly secured using age- and size-appropriate child restraints.
- Ensure children safely enter and exit the vehicle.
- Follow designated transportation routes and schedules.
- Communicate professionally with families, school personnel, and Lightbridge Academy staff.
- Immediately report any transportation concerns, accidents, incidents, behavioral concerns, vehicle issues, or safety concerns to administration.
- Never leave a child unattended in the vehicle.
- Complete a visual and physical check of the vehicle after every trip to ensure no child remains on board.
- Keep the transportation vehicle clean, organized, and free of unnecessary hazards.
- Practice and participate in required emergency vehicle-exit procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding children and families.
Classroom Float Responsibilities
When not actively transporting children, the employee will function as a classroom float and may be assigned to any classroom based on center needs.
Responsibilities include:
- Assist teachers with daily classroom routines and activities.
- Provide attentive and nurturing supervision of children.
- Follow classroom schedules, routines, and curriculum expectations.
- Assist with meals, snacks, diapering, toileting, handwashing, nap/rest time, and transitions.
- Maintain appropriate supervision and staff-to-child ratios.
- Help maintain a clean, safe, and organized classroom.
- Assist with playground supervision and transitions.
- Support teachers with classroom preparation and closing duties.
- Follow individual children's care instructions and center procedures.
- Build positive relationships with children while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
- Assist classrooms during staff breaks, lunches, planning periods, and staffing changes.
- Be flexible and willing to work with infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school-age children as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must possess a current, valid driver's license appropriate for the vehicle being operated.
- Must have a safe driving record acceptable to Lightbridge Academy and applicable licensing requirements.
- Must successfully complete required background checks and employment screenings.
- Must complete required Ohio childcare transportation training through the Ohio Professional Registry.
- Must be physically capable of safely supervising and assisting young children.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with children, families, teachers, and administration.
- Must demonstrate reliability, punctuality, professionalism, and sound judgment.
- Must be comfortable working with children of varying ages and developmental levels.
- Previous childcare, transportation, education, or customer-service experience is preferred.
Ohio childcare rules specifically require employee/child-care-staff drivers to be at least 18, hold the appropriate valid driver's license, follow child-restraint requirements, complete ODJFS childcare transportation training, and practice emergency exiting procedures when the vehicle is used to transport children.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working in a licensed childcare center, preschool, school, or educational setting.
- Previous experience transporting children.
- CPR/First Aid certification.
- Strong attendance and punctuality history.
- Experience working with infants, toddlers, or preschool-aged children.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Physical Requirements
The employee must be able to:
- Safely enter and exit the transportation vehicle multiple times throughout the day.
- Sit for extended periods while driving.
- Bend, stoop, kneel, and move throughout classrooms.
- Assist children with entering and exiting the vehicle.
- Safely supervise children during transportation and classroom activities.
- Lift and carry children when necessary and permitted by center policy.
- Respond quickly to emergencies.
- Maintain active supervision of children throughout the workday.
Schedule & Availability
This position requires flexibility based on the center's transportation and staffing needs.
The employee must be:
- Dependable and punctual.
- Available for scheduled transportation routes.
- Willing to work in classrooms when transportation duties are not being performed.
- Flexible to assist wherever the center has the greatest staffing need.
- Available for occasional schedule adjustments based on enrollment, school schedules, and center needs.
Safety & Compliance
Safety is the highest priority of this position. The Bus Driver / Classroom Float is expected to follow all Lightbridge Academy policies, center procedures, and applicable Ohio childcare licensing regulations.
The employee is responsible for immediately notifying administration of any safety concern, injury, transportation incident, suspected policy violation, or situation that could affect the health or safety of a child.
