Position Title: Corrections Officer
Department: Law Enforcement Center – Jail Division
Responsible To: Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Jail Administrator
Primary Objective of Position:
Under the overall supervision of the Jail Captain, Administrator and the Jail Administrator, is responsible for performing the efficient operation of the Jail. The Corrections Officer must act decisively during crisis situations and emergencies. Performance in the position as a Corrections Officer is reviewed and evaluated by the Corrections Leadership and Administration by observations, inspections and discussions.
Major Areas of Responsibility:
Must comply with all facility Standard Operating Procedures
Responsible for assisting with operational and administrative functions of the Jail as assigned
Oversee inmates to ensure they are safe, secured, and supervised.
Receive and process incoming and outgoing inmate’s according to Standard Operating Procedures of the Jail.
Responsible for the classification and housing of inmates.
Responsible for all prisoner activities (meals, meetings, recreation time).
Take proper care of assigned equipment, keeping it clean and in good working
condition.
Carry out all orders from the Administration and Leadership personnel.
Will work variable schedules to include days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays, may work extended hours when job requires extra hours.
Responsible for assisting Medical Staff for medical needs of prisoners and assist in the care of all prisoners.
Transport and escort prisoners as required
Review, Distribute and Collect mail from the inmates.
Other duties as assigned by the Administration and Leadership as are necessary or incidental to the proper performance of the position.
Attend such training and educational programs as directed.
Report promptly for duty for assigned shifts in the approved uniform.
Conduct searches of inmate(s) and cells according to Standard Operating Procedures of the facility
Continued monitoring of inmates and the jail facility with surveillance cameras and physical observations.
Ability to write detailed incident reports.
Ability to operate the functions of the facility Control Room
Knowledge/Qualifications Required by the Position:
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
No prior felony conviction.
No commission of a felony in the previous five years, including felonious drug use or possession.
Currently possess, or ability to obtain Certification in CPR/AED.
Ability to demonstrate good communication skills.
Ability to maintain a professional relationship with the inmates, general public,
other employees, and all other outside agencies as applicable.
Ability to function effectively under stressful conditions.
Typing and or computer skills required.
Ability to read, write, and perform basic math.
Ability to obtain Basic Corrections Officers training/certification when offered or classes available
Ability to obtain and apply knowledge of the principles, policies, codes, laws and statutes
relating to law enforcement, corrections and necessary operations.
Must pass background and drug check.
Ability to operate communication equipment.

reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
The employee must be able to regularly lift and or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and or move up to 150 pounds with assistance.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision,
and ability to adjust focus.
Inclement Weather:
When Inclement weather is predicted it will be the responsibility of the employee scheduled for work to make arrangements to be inside city limits.
The Public Works Department or Police Department may be able to pick up employees for work within the city limits based on need.
It is expected that the employee notifies their supervisor of any changes as soon as possible.
It is the responsibility of the employee to make their own arrangements to cover scheduled shifts if they are not able to make it to work.

Base salary refers to starting wage policy; the position has benefits as listed in the employee manual which include State of South Dakota retirement, vacation, health insurance and sick leave.
