This posting is for a full-time Middle School English teacher. A competitive candidate will be a strong grammarian, well-versed in the literary canon as well as young adult literature, possess mastery in teaching formal writing, and will be adept at teaching and differentiating in all levels, from the struggling learner to the most academically gifted. The successful candidate will be comfortable using technology and will have a solid academic background in educational pedagogy.
Gaston Day Middle School English teachers are responsible for instructing students in a literary survey format that encompasses poetry, drama, short story, novel, nonfiction, writing, grammar, and vocabulary in accordance with the content and objectives of the curriculum prescribed by the Middle School division and English Department. The successful candidate will have enthusiasm for English and for encouraging students to grow in knowledge and understanding. This teacher will demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of all Gaston Day students and to the best interests of the school as a whole.
Broad responsibilities:
- Instructs students in English in accordance with curriculum requirements and objectives, making effective use of technology, textbooks, and other instructional materials as appropriate.
- Establishes and actively maintains a class environment where excellence in learning is honored and where respectful interaction between and among students is valued.
- Works with students to develop a love of learning, a sense of academic integrity, and a thoughtful work ethic.
- Inspires a love of and appreciation for English in our students.
- Employs a variety of instructional techniques and assessments that address multiple learning styles.
- Participates as an active team member within the English Department, the Middle School faculty, and the school community as a whole.

Reporting:
The Middle School English teacher will report directly to the Middle School Coordinator and the English Department Chair.
Experience and education requirements:
Prefer experience in teaching Middle School English; advanced degree preferred.
Salary: Commensurate with experience.
